It was a violent crash that left a red van mangled and virtually unrecognizable. Emergency crews arrived to find bodies on the snow-covered street. Several were dead, several more injured.

Officials on the scene say earlier this evening the passenger van carrying 16 people was heading northbound on a sleet and snow covered Route 55. The driver lost control and the van corralled into the southbound lane slamming into a box truck, which then hit a third vehicle.

According to police, multiple people were thrown from the van. The driver of the box truck was also ejected and taken to JFK Hospital. The passengers in the third vehicle were not hurt.

New Jersey State Police shutdown both sides of Route 55 for a couple of hours clearing the scene and starting an investigation into what caused the fatal crash.

Many of the injured were taken to Cooper Hospital.

Police are still investigating
