June 25, 2007 - WWE's website has posted the strange and shocking news that wrestler Chris Benoit has been found dead, along with his wife and son. There are no more details available at this time, except that local authorities are investigating the Benoit home. Benoit had called in sick to last night's Pay-Per-View event for unknown reasons.

Tonight's presentation of WWE RAW on USA will be a tribute to Chris Benoit and his family.

Fayetteville, Georgia - Authorities investigating the apparent murder-suicide of professional wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and their seven-year-old son said on Tuesday the details of the deaths may seem a "little bizarre" when released to the public.

The family was found dead on Monday, and authorities were investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide, and were not seeking any suspects outside the Fayette County home. Investigators believe the 40-year-old Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, 47, and son, Daniel, over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

Fayette county district attorney Scott Ballard told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "The details, when they come out, are going to prove a little bizarre."

Those details may emerge after the completion of autopsies scheduled for Tuesday.

Ballard told The Associated Press a gun was not used in any of the deaths. But he declined to say how the three died.

"We're pretty sure we know, but we want to confirm it with the crime lab," Ballard said early on Tuesday.

Fayette County Coroner CJ Mowell did not immediately return phone calls. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) said on its website that it asked authorities to check on the wrestler and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning".

Pope said the three were found about 2:30pm, but he would release no other details about the deaths.

Stamford, Connecticut-based WWE also said on its website it had further information on the deaths, but had been asked by authorities not to release it.

Benoit, a native of Canada, was born in Montreal. He was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles over his career. He was known by several names including "The Canadian Crippler".

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the federation said in a statement on its website.

Benoit was scheduled to perform at the "Vengeance" pay-per-view event on Sunday night in Houston, but was replaced at the last minute because of what announcer Jim Ross called "personal reasons".

Benoit maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling.

The WWE cancelled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name, "Woman," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of an ongoing story line on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.

from another article:

Lt. Tommy Pope, the lead investigator with the Fayette County Sheriff's Department, told ABC News that the "instruments of death were located on scene."

Investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and son over the weekend and than himself some time on Monday.

More details are expected to emerge Tuesday after an autopsy report.

You know I was wondering when steroids would come into the picture--

ATLANTA (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press Tuesday.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said test results may not be back for weeks or even months.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in DeKalb County.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Authorities also declined to say whether drugs or steroids were found inside the house. "We're not releasing any information as far as what was located inside the house," sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said Tuesday.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, Whiteside said investigators found "nothing really out of the ordinary." He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Whiteside said toxicology tests could take up to a week or longer to complete.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"They were nice," said Lorre Jones, who lives across the street. Her daughter Alaina said: "We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm."

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate Tuesday.

"I saw him with his family all the time," said Baswell. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people."

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said it had been asked by authorities not to release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included "The Canadian Crippler."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live Monday Night RAW card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name "Woman." They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, the newspaper said.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

Benoit became a standout at an early age among wrestling prospects who trained in the dungeon basement of the house where fellow Canadians and professional wrestlers Owen and Bret Hart trained. Owen Hart was killed during a wrestling event in 1999.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

I was just reading the same article, of course the ignorant are going to bring Steroids into this. What I'm really curious is how he killed them and himself, one article states no guns or knives were used and it also says the bodies were all over the house. It's also weird that he killed them and then waited a day or so before killing himself, that's crazy with a capitol K

ATLANTA --Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."

I knew they would eventually go here.. and that is sad.
This is the type of hype that is not needed:

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with the pulley of a weightlifting machine, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators found prescription anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man was unhinged by the drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."

Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's motive or state of mind. No suicide note was found.

"I'm baffled about why anybody would kill a 7-year-old," District Attorney Scott Ballard said. "I don't think we'll ever be able wrap our head around that."

Benoit, a Montreal native whose nickname was "The Canadian Crippler," was one of the stars of the WWE wrestling circuit and was known for his wholesome family man image. His wife, Nancy, was a wrestling stage manager who worked under the name "Woman." They met and fell in love when their wrestling story lines intertwined.

When he won the world heavyweight championship, Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) hoisted the belt over his head and invited his wife and child into the ring to celebrate.

Nevertheless, Nancy Benoit filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment."

She later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.

In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In his response, Benoit sought joint custody.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three rooms of the house, off a gravel road.

Benoit's wife, 43, was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle, Ballard said.

The son, Daniel, was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, Ballard said.

Benoit, 40, apparently killed himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the WWE wrestling star spread out the killings over a weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies.

Toxicology test results may not be available for weeks or even months, he said. As for whether steroids played a role in the crime, he said: "We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at."

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Went to aol.com to check mail, and first thing i saw was a pic of him, quoted, was roid rage a factor...thats ridiculus, it happens everytime

Now.. the local talk radio sports guys here are now coming down on roids and are blaming GI Joe as the driving force. I can't wait to see what will happen at my work. There are some holier than thou's that work here and I can imagine the lectures I am going to get....

this is truly sad but maybe they should think about all the other pills these guys are on from getting slammedinto the mat's 350 days out of the year. They have alot more to do with behavior then the fucking gear does god i hate fucking society. Im gonna move into the woods of wyoming build a log cabin and a log gym and never go leave.

Ok my mom and sis were just talking about this in front of me, here is what they said.."I heard the steroids did it", "That's what I heard too"....all I could do was keep my mouth shut,, Its a shame how media will look for any reason to blame anything on steroids..

I wonder if they found coffee in the house? Mabey caffene made him do it. There
seem to be more and more people killing their family, then themselves - you get one
"musclehead" and "it must have been the steriods". I just dont understand how
people can do that to their kids. If you want to check out, be my guest but leave
the fucking kids alone. I'll never understand. If anything, my kids would keep me
going. I could never hurt them and If I'm gone, who will take care of them - no matter
how old they are I feel the same. What a shame.

I don't get it...an evil, maniacal, twisted cheating woman maybe made a guy like him to freak out in such a way...maybe. But an innocent child?! No, it makes no sense to me at all.

Personally, I don't see how anything could cause a man to execute such a bloodbath. I feel that we don't know the whole story. Deep roots with this one, because I cannot imagine Benoit just flipping out for no good reason, especially when it comes to anything to do with AAS.

A man who has been mentally and emotionally worn to the thread, perhaps snapping and committing a fraction of such a horrible act like this...but never to this degree and never EVER because so-called "roid rage" made him do it.
