Gay gym gaffe strikes again
By JOHN HAROLD - Papakura Courier | Wednesday, 25 July 2007

UNBELIEVABLE MISTAKE: Ray Parker can't believe a bogus listing describing his fitness centre as 'homosexual gym' has been accidentally printed again.

A bogus listing describing Ray Parker's fitness centre as a 'homosexual gym' has been accidentally printed again in the new Auckland phone directory.
The bogus listing for the Papakura gym appears immediately below the correct listing in the white pages section of the new 2007-2008 Manukau and Papakura local directory released this month.
A fabricated Yellow Pages ad and the bogus listing first appeared in the 2007 Auckland phone book, which went out in March.
Someone paid $2700 out of their own pocket to book the ad in the business directory in an apparent bid to damage Mr Parker's business.
Mr Parker publicly raised concerns about the ad in late April.
The deadline for listings in the local directory was the following month.
Yellow Pages Group corporate communications manager Wendy Rayman says once the company found out about the bogus ad and listing, it retracted all the paid-for-advertising.
But the free listing in the white pages 'slipped through'.
"It was an absolute error on our part that this one actually slipped through because it's a zero rating, because it's a free listing.
"It's no excuse; we should have pulled it.
"We have apologised to Mr Parker and we are working with him.
"We will be meeting with him shortly to work it through and how to avoid it in future."
Mr Parker says the error is 'unbelievable'.
He's not sure if he will ask for compensation but he says he would like the company to pay for advertising elsewhere to undo some of the damage the bogus listing has caused his business.
In May Mr Parker told the Papakura Courier that his business relied on the Yellow Pages to bring in most of its new customers.
He was worried the bogus ad would deter some would-be customers who might think the gym is exclusively for gay and lesbian customers and would find another place to work out.
"We're still doing a lot of fix-up work. We're still dealing with it and trying to make things as good as they can be."
