Mr. Beer

Ok, my wife and I stopped at one of those outlet malls on the way back from Ok last week. You know, the kind that they sell the reject clothes and products in...anyhow. I found something in a kitchen store we stopped @ called Mr. Beer. It's a home brewing kit and so naturally I bought it, cause who wouldn't want their own beer. So, I've started my first brew and it will be done fermenting tomorrow or Tuesday. Then i've got to bottle it and see if it tastes like balls in a week or two. Has anyone else ever used anything like this. I've heard mixed reviews...I guess this is a mute point as I've already bought it, but if anyone has used it and wants to help a brutha out with recipies or tips, I'd appreciate it.

I'm curious about this...let us know how it turns out when it's all said and done! If it goes well I may haveto invest in one myself.

thats sweet bro im going to a home brewing class with a buddy sometime this month its 25 bucks. They teach you and you get all the supplys to do it you make it and after its done fermenting and what not you get to take it home pretty sweet. Let me know if your s is any good bud.

Always wanted to do that - funny cus I havent drank in years. One of my cousins
made his own beer. Tasted like shit but got you hammered. I liked it.

ok, so I bottled it yesterday morning. I was supposed to bottle it on Monday, but I could still see some bubbles in the fermenter to I waited a day. I sterilized everything and then bottled. It's now sitting in my closet and the plastic bottles are getting hard. I have been reading alot on it and the general consensus is to spend about 60 more dollars and get a real good started kit, even a intermediate kit. They are 5 gallons instead of 2.5 and there is a lot more equipment with it. That can be good or bad for me at this point, but I'm sure it will be better in the long run. If I keep this up my wife is going to buy me a real good one for christmas. I got in my 2nd order of supplies yesterday and I'm going to start making a Hard Apple Cider tomorrow and then a Guniess type beer in about a month. ONly thing with the guiness is that it has to sit for 6 months before i can drink it.

I also got a wild hair yesterday and decided to try making my own root-beer. I made 6 liters of it and bottled it yesterday. My shorter turn-around time with this, so I'll be able to drink it this weekend hopefully. We'll see.

lmao norm. wouldnt surprise me no wait doenst have anything to do with making yourself look better and bodybuilding so no prob not. I cant wait to try it too spidey. How long does it have to sit in the bottles before you can drink it? If you get pretty into this i expect a 6 pack of your finest coming my way in the near future lol.

I can see it in the headlines now. "Bodybuilder goes beserk when batch of beer
goes bad. Somehow steriod related!!"

that is my excuse, I guarantee it...and you will have some coming your way G...but not until I get this thing down. No one wants to drink skunky beer!!! I sure hope it turns out, otherwise I gotta drink it quick so it won't taste so bad.

MR BEER! i've got one of those... my first batch was KILLER. i made the Pale Ale although it was a Pale Ale, it was definitely FULL bodied. i was very impressed with it. 1 (or 2 TOPS) and you were good for the night.

after that my Dad made a batch of one of their darker brews. it came out alright. reminded me of a guiness almost.

3rd time around I tried one of their recipe beers and i think i mde some kinda pumpkin spice beer that didnt' turn out too hot.

i think if you just go with their basic mixes or stick STRICTLY to their recipe you'll be alright

Sounds pretty sweet, the only thing is that is sucks you have to wait a few weeks to get your beer. I'm not that patient LOL

yea, me too. Jesus, how many beers could I drink just waiting for it to brew?

Ok, I tried the first batch last night. It was a Pale Ale and it was alright. I'm not really a big fan of light beers, but this is definitely a light beer. The taste was alright, just not quite as smooth as I'd like it to be, but I did crack it open to early so I'm hoping that another week in the fridge will make it a little smoother. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. I had some buddies over that drink a lot and they were big fans of it. I've got a hard apple cider fermenting right now and a guiness type going to go in as soon as this one comes out. I am really starting to get into this hobby. It doesn't take that much time up (@ least in the process of making it) and I get lots of beer. I'm probably going to get a better setup in December as a Xmas gift from my wife. I found a couple, but the one I want is a little to pricey. So we'll see. G, I'll wait to send you one until I make sure I get this stuff down and then I'll try to send you one that doesn't taste like balls. I think the Hard Apple Cider will be ready for Thanksgiving and I"ll be back in OK, so I might just run it up to the city. Oh, and I hit 1000 posts sometime yesterday. Yeah me!!! later boys

yeah, I finally figured out why Mr. Beer got so many rough reviews...it's hard as hell to clean. For X-mas my wife is getting me some more equipment. Two 6.5 gallon fermenters (primary and secondary) + two 5 gallon glass carboys + all the equipment to get them going. So hopefully i'll get better at it. Oh, you got a bottle of Hard Apple Cider coming your way in 1 week G...so get ready bud.

Thought I'd update this post...so no more Mr. Beer. However, that's only because I have much better equipment now. My wife decided that she wanted to make some wine so we bought the minimum equipment for it. Made 24 bottles of a Peach Chardonnay and it turned out really good. That was what we gave all of our family for X-mas and the rest is already gone.

So right now we have four 5 gallon fermenters, four 5 gallon glass carboys, and a 3 gallon glass carboy. I've made a Peach Chardonnay wine which is all gone, just bottled a Blueberry Shiraz (I don't like it right now, but the wife loves fruity wines). There is a blackberry Merlot clearing right now and will be ready to bottle in a week, also there's another 5 gallons of an Orange Blossom Muscadine that will be ready in a few more weeks. I haven't used my Mr. Beer kit since I got this equipment and I hadn't made anymore beer until recently, due to the nasty taste of the hard apple cider. However, I made a wheat beer recently and it was ready to drink last thursday. It's not amazing, but it's better than anything you can buy at the store IMO, especially when you put an orange slice in it. I've got about 40 bottles of that left and a lot of wine about to come out. Plans for the future are to put a Strawberry White Zinfendal in and then figure out what kind of beer I'm going to make next.

I have to say this is one of the most addictive hobbies I've ever had. I'm actually looking into equipment to do a complete mash, but that will be a little more expensive and I will need a lot more space for it. Thankfully I've just got to clean out the shed. I'll let you know how it goes, but this is for sure something that I will be doing for years to come...OH I also have 3 gallons of an Ancient Orange Mead fermenting in the laundry room...never had mead before, but I think it will be good.
