Report: Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell IV in works for Germany event
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Nov 23, 2008 at 10:54 am ET
After competing in three legendary light-heavyweight fights, former UFC champions Randy Couture (16-9 MMA, 13-6 UFC) and Chuck Liddell (21-6 MMA, 16-5 UFC) could now meet during a heavyweight encounter at a June 13 event in Cologne, Germany.

The report comes from the U.K.-based The Sun, which cites UFC officials as saying Liddell has been offered the heavyweight main event.

Couture recently lost his heavyweight belt to Brock Lesnar at UFC 91. Liddell, meanwhile, has dropped three of his four past fights at light heavyweight, but he's made no public statement regarding a potential move up to heavyweight.

A source told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Couture is open to a fourth Liddell fight, but we've been unable to confirm is the fight has been offered to Liddell.

With the event apparently in the works for Germany, it should come as little surprise that the UFC invited a small contingent of German press to UFC 91 to see Couture's main event with Lesnar. The 45-year-old Couture speaks German and has long been considered a likely headliner once the UFC does head to Germany, a market UFC officials have continually mentioned as a site for future expansion.

Couture and Liddell took part in a popular trilogy of fights that played out between 2003 and 2006. Couture scored a third-round TKO at UFC 43 to win the first match-up for the interim heavyweight title (former champ Tito Ortiz had been stripped of the title), but the 38-year-old Liddell won back the belt and made a successful title defense over Couture with knockout wins at UFC 52 and UFC 57.

With Liddell potentially tied up with the Germany event, he is apparently no longer being considered as an opponent for Anderson Silva at UFC 95 in London, England.

The Sun reported the possibility of the bout, and though not opposed to the fight, Silva's manager, Ed Soares, last week told MMAjunkie.com that the UFC had not officially approached them about it.

The newspaper now reports that Silva, the UFC's current middleweight champion, could instead meet one of the losers from UFC 92's two marquee 205-pound fights: UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans or Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson.

The fight would take place at 205 pounds as a non-title affair.

A strong source indicates to Bloody Elbow that Chuck Liddell is currently in negotiations to move to heavyweight in order to fight Randy Couture. The proposed fight would take place on June 13th in Cologne, Germany.

The UFC wants to have Randy on their Germany show because he speaks the language and can do all the promotion. The winner of the fight would face the heavyweight champion in a big fight at the end of the year.

Couture is uninterested in moving down to 205 where Forrest Griffin is champion and Wanderlei Silva is also a contender. Both are close to him and in his camp, and weight cutting takes a toll at his age. Given his status, they aren't going to have him fight guys like Cheick Kongo, it is only big fights for Couture at this stage.

For Liddell, the thought is that at his age the weight cutting process is taking more of a toll on his body, and whereas he would have to win a bunch of fights to get back at contention at 205, the heavyweight division is thin enough where he could jump in and be an immediate contender with a win.

It is believed internally that Couture/Liddell will draw better than Silva/Liddell, and they know that a potential Liddell/Lesnar match would probably be the biggest PPV in the history of MMA. It's one of those win-win situations for PPV business. Even a match between the two losers later in the year could likely do big business.

The Anderson Silva match was discussed, but the buyrate news from October pretty much sealed the deal against that fight. Anderson Silva will still probably fight in February in the UK, but not against Liddell.

Update: This show will be UFC 99 unless they add another show to their schedule. UFC 100 will be the weekend of July 4.

Stupid move for Randy once again. Chuck isnt quite the same as he used to be but its a terrible matchup for Randy as he more then likely wont be able to take chuck down. Chuck has this one more then likely im afraid..

I wouldn't even be hyped for this fight. I'd give the advantage to the old Chuck, but today I give it to Randy.

i still give it to chuck its a bad matchup for randy. Chuck still strikes the same people are just catching up with him and fighting differently with chucks take down defense i think he will take randy out without a problem.

i dont wanna see either i wanna see randy get the fuck out while hes being remembered as a hero and not bring himself down like shamrock etc. I think he needs to retire now. If he fought lesnar again more then likely the same thing would happen. He just needs to know when to stop hes in the hall of fame start announcing with joe rogan and call it a day.
