Enlisted in the marines

Leaving for boot camp , October 12th.

In the training guide that they give to DEP'ers they want you to do pullups.

Well they say the way to do them is either with palms towards or away.... Why would out of all the people who mess up pullups and chinups... would it be the military?

Are we going to do both , pullups and chinups... or whenever you do your ups do you always get to choose which grip your going to use?

Pullups are usually done with palms facing away from you. Chinups are palms facing towards you. At least that's what I've always been told.

What made you want to join the Marines?

Congrats on the decision brother. I can tell you from experience that they will have you doing all of your pull-ups with your palms facing away from you, just like Saudades said. I signed up to be a Marine Officer when I was 19 an in college, went through 1 summer of PLC training and then screwed up and got kicked out of the program. But I can tell you that you will never do a chin-up in the marines...at least I didn't.

I know that lol , its just in the training book , they tell you how to do pullups with both grips and still call them pullups.

Ive always thought the same thing you think.

My life isnt going anywhere how it is , there is no job security , I have to do everything myself , and where im at and the situation im in and the way insurance is designed , The only way for me to be independant and starting making steps towards a real life is the military.

My parents havent been able to help me , they've been keeping me where im at , no license , no insurance and no ride to find a job so I can be independant.....

theres no point of being dependant on somebody if they cant help you to where you can fully depend on yourself. As for which branch. It just feels more suited to me , than the navy or air force ... so was either the army or marines...

I just made the choice of whichever one I could come into contact with the quickest. The training is suppose to be more hardcore as far as I know and have been told. So despite marines not getting an enlistment bonus their first time enlisting. I went with the marines.

The only thing I dont really like about the marines , is the blue pants with the red stripe lol... The white pants are fine by me though. So uniform dislikes as of this point is my only dislike but thats only a about looks , I dont know the historical or symbolic meaning of the pants though. So that just something I will have to deal with , or grow to respect after I learn about it or get on my way of becoming a marine. So thats not really a big deal.

Personally I love camo tho

Hey bro I want to personaly congratualte you and thank you on behalf of our country! Especialy siging up in times of war! The uniform the marines have in my opinion is the best looking uniform out of all the branches but thats just my opinion, my family was in the navy as was my wifes father however I never joined so i have no info for ya on any of it but i think its comendable of you

Also im not sure how old you are but it seems like u put some thought into this and did so in a mature manor in that you weighed your lifes options and recognized where you are in life and recognized that not much will change in ur life if u didnt make this decision, I was prety impressed reading why you joined bro! I hope you do well! Honestly!

Well, good luck, and bump what Presser said for me, too. My older brother is in the Air Force Reserves after having been in active duty in the Air Force for a while. They wouldn't take me anywhere because I'm blind as a bat without my contacts/glasses.

its great to see someone so young actually give a fuck, and change their negative situation into a positive one! I was gonna join the army, was all signed up, then back out and decided to take the school approach, but thats me, and school is not for everyone. Congrats bro! Wish you luck!

You can choose which way you want to do your pull-ups; palms out or in. Just make sure you are practicing going all the way down to arms locked out and all the way up to chin over the bar (no kipping - dead hang). Let me know if you have any other questions as I've been in the Marines for a while, both enlisted and officer. P.S. welcome to the brotherhood and the red stripe is called a blood stripe (signifying blood shed in battle).

I remember When I was at the MEP's in 2000 for the marines they had me do chinups with palms facing in then chinups with palms out.....either way I did 20 each and at 240lb's they were jacked about it........Preparation was mostly endurance. I did alot of swimming and running. I ran 10miles in the morning and another ten in the evening for 6 months before bootcamp. This really made bootcamp easy.

In bootcamp I realized how my strength training really played a role in dominating the class. While other guys struggled I easily did my pullups and pushups......situps and all that shit was a breaze.

In summary I believe if you put yourself in a pre-bootcamp intensive regimen you can breaze through it and you will see the contrast between you and the couch potato who struggles. Always help your fellow bootcamp brothers......When someone lags behind you pick them up and push them. Take a leadership role and you will succeed to getting first or atleast top 3 in camp.

Congratulations. Camp david or pendleton.....No matter where they assign you if you take a leadership role by picking up and lifting your brothers at all times and you will succeed and command respect while rising in rank fast.

I cant emphasize how important it is that you not allow anyone to fail in your presence.

Believe me you will love the uniform. Not for it's look but for what it represents. Yes the training is hardcore. They mentally break you down then rebuild you. Like I say, if you train hard now by the time you get in you will be physically prepared ......More so than the average guy going in who doesnt do much.

Have you taken your test? Did you decide on a career choice or did you just jump into infantry? I dont think it ever mattered what people chose because I scored really high and was still thrown into infantry. Wars usually warrant that when your a young strong fit male.

where r u goint to boot camp chris? If your going to the island, i might just see you there. Get that 0311 MOS, your going to b a Marine, mine aswell go all out and do the whole infantry thing....but that is completely up to you. Good luck bro.

i was an 0311 and loved every second i was in. being away from my family blew but wouldnt change a dam thing.

I havent chose my MOS yet since I dont ship off till october just as long as I choose it before I leave then I wont be given one randomly. Also same with location.

But first choice I guess ill TRY for Recon , secondary be infantry , and 3rd i dunno yet , Im going to have alot of time to decide fully and time with recruiter once Poolie functions n stuff start cause then recruiting PT's on saturdays
