cable internet

Since my house is so far from the road (800ft) the cable company says I have to hire a contractor to run the cable from the road to my house,then they'll hook it up.Too bad the contractors want $1200. My dad used to work for BCTel now Telus and he used to run telephone lines all day so I'm pretty sure he can do it for me,I just gotta find out the name of the cable they use. Anyone have a clue?

I dont know much about it but for mine it looks like the same cable they use for the tv connection. Might be 8 gauge? 1200!! damn..thats ridiculous dude.

dunno ... but it ain't looking like the tv-cable .. thats only to be used between the extension(?) and you're puter.. and it can't be longer than 10-15metres long without using a "signal enhancement device" (lacking a better word), most likely they use an optical cable, which is pretty fukin expensive .. imo not worth it ...

you can try DSL instead...
besides most electricity companies will soon enough, if they haven't already, offer cable through theire system, and you're already hooked up to them so .. cashing out 1200 bucks now is just a waste imo ..

thanx for the ifo guys,
I think it's called lvl5 or (cat5)  know I just have to find out the different moisture characteristics. I would love to get adsl but I live too far from town to get it ???  I was using satelite for internet but it was only one way so I still needed my phone line.It wasn't very fast  and quite expensive so I cancelled it.They plan on having adsl to my house by next year ,I guess I'll just have to live with it untill then >;

Brad,

Broadband Cable internet access uses coaxial cable, the same as you would use for cable television.  Cat 5 cable is not the same as coaxial cable. Cat 5 or category 5 is used for ethernet connections to a LAN, WAN etc.  If you need more help email me.

i thought they also used a diff. type of cable that runs to the house versus in the house.  diff. cable types can only run certain distances before the need to be aplified.

i work a deal with cat 5 and networking.

That may be true TJW, I'll find out and report what I find here.

I have a masters in digital communications and work as an IT Manager.

Brad,

To answer the type of cable you will need is as follows.  RG-6 coaxial cable as opposed to the old RG-58.  It provides a much clearer transmission due to its ability to shield outside noise.  In order to utilize RG-6 cable you need to use the following guidelines.

a 50-ohm terminator on each end of the cable;
a maximum of 3 segments with attached devices (populated segments)
a maximum length of 1,640 feet (500 meters) per segment;
a maximum of 4,920 feet (1500 meters) per segment trunk;
one ground per segment;
a maximum of 16 feet (5 meters) between a tap and its device; and
a minimum of 8 feet (2.5 meters) between taps

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you need anymore information.
