Safe to do?

Are one are dumbell shrugs safe to do? Without having weight in your other hand as a counterbalance for your torso?

Of course I will be doing weight that my traps can handle with good form , but I dont know about the static upright position that my torso is going to be exposed to....

Opinions? please...

I do them it tends to hit the very upper trap end even neck muscles for me. I turn my head to the opposite side with every rep helps me contract that muscle better. give it a try see how you like them. I always do them last after ive already dominated my traps.

Since your doing them last , do you still go heavy on them? Or just light/medium weight? Cause its all the shrug work im going to be doing.

Is the only increase injury risk if you let your body lean/bend/sag with them?

Right now im going to assume their completely safe to do as long as the person doing them is not a form grunter  , and go ahead and do them since I try to keep everything tight and upright.

I personally think they are fine, the only thing i can see it hurting is possibly straining a neck muscle but that would be probably from going too heavy. I keep the singles in the medium range. Say 60 or 70 ilb dumbells usually. And work on a strict slow contraction. Regular db shrugs i go up to the 120's for reps of 20 or more. Try them out I doubt you could do the same amount you normally use on the singles its much more concentrated if you will. I think it helps my neck grow a little thicker too which is a huge plus for me.

thanks , currently the most I have to work with right now is a total of 45lbs on one dumbell. Hopefully I'll buy more 10's soon... I want enough just to be able to hold me over till I save up to get all the weight I need in bulk.

Yeah i hear ya, would be alot better to buy in bulk im sure especially for shipping. Try it out let me know how it feels.
