Massage after training? Good idea or bad idea?

I've read about the benefits of deep tissue massage for muscle growth, but what about a massage a couple hours after training to help stretch the fascia, etc? Do you think that would be beneficial or could it have negative results in some way?

alot of pros do get those, and im actually due for one myself.

i think it would def help in the sense of muscle recovery, streching, and growth...

but when to have it done is a good question... i could imagine right after the workout might not be the best idea, like you said CRG, a few hours later makes more sense

Yeah, well I don't mean like immediately after the workout. But I also belong to Massage Envy and they have a special going on where if you schedule a 1 hour massage at 8 or 8:30pm that will add an extra 30 minutes on it for free, but it's only on weekdays.

I figured, train after work, be done by about 6-6:30, go home have a protein shake, shower, eat something and go get a massage a couple hours later. What do you think about that? A couple hours in between?

Like you said, recovery, growth, stretching and I figure probably reduce soreness as well.

I think after while ur still somewhat pumped is a good idea. I think jay even used to do that in some of his older videos.

Painful but helps.

My girl gives me swedish massages alot, I swear she keeps me loose and my recoverytime to a minimum.

That's what I'm talking about. Swedish is just a normal relaxing massage right? I know the deep tissue is good for you but it's so uncomfortable I would rather get a Swedish massage.

Bump for more input.

i prefer a quick japanese rub and tug myself :).

But seriously deep tissues are godlike i love them and wanna marry a massage therapist. Regular massages feel better for sure and im sure would help to some degree.

I had tried this a few weeks ago and it killed me! I had a deep tissue done about 3 or 4 hours after my workout and I was sore for days! This could just be me though; it was a relatively new workout and I tend to get a lot of knots in between my shoulder blades. I usually love deep tissue, next time though I'm doing it on a day off!

LOL!!!!!

I was engaged to a massage therapist for a long time, and I have to say I kick myself every day for letting her go. lol. I now get deep tissue massages 2-3 times a month. In fact, this weekend is my next.

Do you just pick a bodypart and go for that or do you get a quick one full body style? They normally have to spend like 30 minutes just on my back because i have so much shit in there ie nots etc.

My girl normally focuses on the lat/rhomboid/trap area. She spends about 45-50 minutes on my back/glutes, then another 10-15 on my neck/traps with me on my back. Then she stretches me out pretty good, so by time I get into the chiro's office, I'm limber, loose, and he can pop the shit out of me and get me all lined back up. She usually complains that by time she's done with me, she's ready to go home because she had to work so hard and dig so deep. But I have to give it to her, and CH3NO2 can back me up on this, because I turned him on to her, for a little girl (who happens to be smoking hot) she can dig and apply incredible amounts of pressure. She's made me stop breathing a few times.

Haha thats awesome specially since shes hot. Im kinda glad the ones i go too arent all that good looking id roll over and be pitching a tent, a small tent but a tent :coollook:.

Yeah the lady doing my back last year had to take a break during the session lol her arms started cramping up hurts like a bitch but its such a welcome pain.

We've got 2 or 3 at our place that are hot little girls. The larger, less attractive girls, don't seem to be able to go as deep, and they just can't hit the spots. So it's a win/win for us. Better massages and much better company. lol

Do your massage therapists talk to you? When I go (which is rare... I really would love to make an appointment soon!), I want to go and relax. I don't want to talk... I went to Massage Envy once and the kid was trying to talk to me about music and my ink. Ahhh, shut up! I'm here to relax! When I started giving shorter responses, he finally got the hint and the second half of the therapy was much quieter. I prefer females though. Little emo boy was decent, but I rather have a woman digging into me.

The other funny thing is that people think because I'm small that I'm sensitive but I like when they dig deep and apply alot of pressure. Ever since I got the boobs, I need a towel to prop between them since it's awkward to have them being squished onto the table, but once I'm set up and comfy, it feels soooooooo good. I could care less about the rest of my body if they just focus on my back the entire time. :)

^^^I used to be the same way with only having females massage me but the more serious I got into lifting the more I realized I needed a LOT of pressure for a very DEEP tissue massage. So, I have a guy who comes to my place about once every 6 weeks and he's straighter than an arrow so I don't have to worry about an attempted happy ending.

If I was massage therapist I'd only do women. Yuck, can you imagine getting some old harry man laying your table and having to run your hands through that shit? :puke:

Yeah, she doesn't contortme or anything and the only time it hurts is if my shit is reallllllly sore.

First, Steph, your avatar is awesome!!

To answer your questions, they talk to me, depending on if I initiate the conversation. My favorite girl and I talk the whole hour+. I really don't mind talking to her. It's almost like a therapy session while I'm getting massaged, because I can vent to her and tell her why my back and neck are so knotted up. lol. Some of the other ones, we do the normal basic chit chat for the first 2 minutes, then it's silence for the rest of the time, unless I gasp in pain.
I learned long ago, when I was engaged to a therapist, that the little girls are the best ones to have working on you. (I really should've kept her, and not let her go) They can go the deepest and cause the most pain, but it's worth it in the end. I NEVER underestimate the power of a smaller female now. :show:

Ha, thanks... wish I could say that it was me! Maybe one day!! :)

I guess it depends who's working on you. If you're a regular client, I could see how the normal chitchat could work its way into conversation. And I get how that could happen when you first meet a therapist, but for the most part, I just want to relax...

Exactly! There are some that you don't want to talk to, and you just want to relax and let them work. Although, I don't know about your massages, but for the majority of mine, there's not much relaxing, because it hurts so bad as she's digging down trying to massage my lung. lol

I've had sports therapy massage off and now for 20+ years and firmly recommend it. Not a fan of Swedish personally. I like pain :satan:

One caution - if you have a body part that is still sore from the latest workout tell the PT. Deep tissue massage on a muscle that is trying to rebuild prolongs the recovery process. And drink lots of water the hour afterward to help clear out the free radicals.
