Watch the mileage bro. Ford SUV are notorious  for tranny/transfer case problems when they get up there in miles. I would say if your getting a good price on it..it probably has a shitload of miles......Just out of curiosity are you lookin for an SUV or justa  4x4.
If you just lookin for a 4x4 I know where there is a 1994 Ford Ranger that has 58,000 miles that could prob be bought for $4000 or less...cash! 5-speed ,V-6,air,cruise, Nice truck..I am wanting to buy it but that would make 5 cars and mrs456 ain't havin that! :D

im strickly looking for a suv..I have a 4 runner now that gets less than(I shit you not) 10 mpg. Of course I have it all superlifted up(I live where superlift was originated..btw :D ) 4 inches..have 35X12.5 at tires..Im getting too fuckin old to be climbing in and out of it and driving from one gas station to the next is getting old too..lol. Im keepin the runner but wanting a suv either 4x or 2x doesnt really matter..anything that will get me from driving my runner ed. Btw..you were right 456..that expedition has about 70k on it. I havent taken to my mechanic yet so im still looking in to it. Later.

70k for a 98 isn't that bad bro. It all depends on if you are mechanically inclined or not. If you have to take your vehicle to the dealer when something happens...you will be better off spending the extra cash on a newer vehicle with a warranty.
They sell vehicles cheap with high mileage for people like me in Iowa, who work on them when we aren't baling hay and combining corn <!--emo&{}--><img src="http://musclechemistry.mantisforums.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='{}'><!--endemo-->
And BTW superlift might have been invented where you live but the idea of lifting a Toyota up was pretty much invented and still to this day is most popular in Yuma..Arizona..lol.

SOME USED CARS U CAN BUY A EXTENDED WARRANTY!  WORTH THE MONEY IF YOU GET THE RIGHT ONE!

I JUST BOUGHT A NEW CAR!

Ragin..I lived in Yuma for about a year...those guys and there Toyota trucks just blows my mind..lol. This was in 1988 so it was back aways. They jack em up go get them stuck in the sand and do it all over again...it was a bunch of crazy jarheads :D

Stone1000...I don't think that is true at all. I have only purchased 6 new vehicles in my life..I have owned around 30. Out of those vehicles the used ones were some of the best. When purchasing a vehicle you have to know what to look for..I can tell you within minutes whether a car or truck has had a rough life or not. If your not very familiar with vehicles its wise to take somebody who is. Don't let a nice paint job or fresh detail job cloud your vision.

I take my to a trusted mechanic thats been my familiys only one for a few decades now..But out of curiousity 456, cause im not gifted in the mechanics field at all..lol, what do you primarily look for when you scope used cars?

I try to look for general apperance stuff like:
1.Does all the paint match?
2. Does the texture of the paint match...as in ...a fender lookin slightly different texturewise than the hood.
3. Do all the body lines..line up?  It is virtually impossible to get lets say a hood and a front fender to line up properly after a car has been wrecked. One area that it a give away for a front end wreck is where the grill or front fascia area meets the hood..it should be a smooth transition..no gaping holes or uneven edges.
4.Look to make sure that gaps are equal at all points where body parts meet each other..If a door has a 1/8" gap at the top it should have an 1/8" gap all the way to the bottom.
 As for mechanical:
1. Take the oil filler cap off check to see if there is a white substance inside the cap..if so walk away.
2. Make sure the vehicle is cold and have someone start it...while you stand behind it and look at the exhaust
blue smoke..oil ring on pistons are worn ...if it only smokes on start up.then clears up ...this means that the valve guides are going bad
white smoke= coolant(antifreeze) in the oil =cracked head or block or blown head gasket
It should idle smooth and have no hiccups/hesitations etc.
On the road test..run the shit out of it. If its gonna break you want it to break before you own it

In general bro look for things that would indicate a previous owner took good care of the car:
Few door dings would indicate he/she took the extra effort to park away from other cars in parking lots
Interior that is clean with no stains (granted 99% of stains can be removed at any reputable detail shop)
Most of the time if a car has been to a detail shop it will smeel too nice...the innerfenderwells might be freshly spray painted black..I could go on and on bro but this will get you started

Just so you know...my friend has been detailing cars for 15years and EVERY major dealership around him plunks down $80-$200 per car to him to get that extra buck out of it when they sell it. :D  Only because they know how much abuse he can cover up..lol. Best bet..buy from private owner..if your buying outright you would be a fool to buy from a dealer. ???

I have a 98 ford F150 3 door. Fully loaded, except leather. Its the same exact rig, without the seating room. I love my truck!!!! We had a 98 explorer, and it was a really nice ride to. I would say....BUY IT, you will be happy with it!!!! Later
