The back injury that forced former UFC interim champion Shane Carwin out of UFC 125 now has put him in the operating room.

Carwin, who was slated to fight fellow heavyweight Roy Nelson at the Jan. 1 show, recently pulled out of the fight because of lingering back problems.

Rather than risk the injury worsening and having an unknown recovery and return time, he opted for surgery, which began this morning.

Carwin is undergoing a "foraminotomy," his manager, Jason Genet, today confirmed via Twitter. The procedure is used to relieve pressure on compressed and pinched nerves. Although considered minimally invasive, the surgery requires incisions in the back of the neck and in the affected vertebrae. According to Genet, specialist Dr. Chad Prusmack will use the procedure to target Carwin's C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae.

Carwin also Tweeted about the procedure on Monday.

"Long, painful day," he wrote. "The pills have me sick, and the pain still trumps the pills. Tomorrow can't come soon enough."

At 10:15 a.m. ET (7:15 a.m. PT), he Tweeted that he was about to undergo the procedure.

Earlier this month, Carwin stated that he struggled with the decision to pull out of UFC 125 but ultimately decided he needs to be fully healthy to compete in the UFC.
