Who'd of thunk this game to be so close? 15-13? I surely didn't! I did however feel they'd put up a good fight though -- Cal hasn't lost a home game in years if I'm not mistaken. The good news is for Auburn fans: with first place only seperated by a few thousandths of a point, Auburn will take back the #1 spot (and deservedly so). Thank God my guys have a bi week coming up, those boys need a break--They have a lot to work on!

Oh yea, what's up with our worthless piece of shit kicker? What the hell is that asshole doing missing two relatively easy field goals? I'm writing my senator after this one.

Eugene: The top-ranked Oregon Ducks were clear favorites over unranked California. But the Golden Bears play tough in Berkeley - nearly tough enough to beat Oregon. Nearly... but not quite.

Cal took advantage of a failed Oregon fourth-down conversion attempt to take a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

Oregon pulled ahead in the second quarter, on a 64-yard Cliff Harris TD punt return, followed by a two-point conversion. That made it 8-7.

The Ducks' offense didn't score its first touchdown until early in the third quarter. That 29-yard pass from Darron Thomas to Jeff Maehl made it 15-7. Cal's defense played a huge role. The ball was punched out of Thomas' hand later in the quarter, leading to a Cal touchdown. But the Golden Bears, trying to equal that earlier Oregon two-point conversion, tried one of their own - and failed. That left Oregon with a precarious 15-13 lead into the fourth quarter - and clear to the end of the game.

Throughout the contest, Cal's defense played tough, pushing Oregon's blockers into holding penalties which helped stall the offense. But that one offensive touchdown, was just enough. The final Oregon drive didn't yield a score, but it just managed - through several crucial third-down conversions - to keep the ball in the Ducks' hands until time expired. Oregon escaped with the win to keep its undefeated record intact, and keep its national championship hopes alive. However, it also exposed some of Oregon's potential weak points.

The game was close enough to turn on any one play, and one such play happened in the third quarter, when Cal kicked a field goal to apparently take a one-point lead. But a penalty nullified that goal, and their next try - from a few yards farther away - missed the uprights.

Should the Ducks not get into that national title game, they're now in a stronger position than ever to reach the Rose Bowl. They would have to lose both of their final two regular-season games - to Arizona and Oregon State - not to seize the Rose Bowl as a prime consolation prize.

Oregon may have survived the Cal game, but Oregon State did not survive its game against Washington State. Until this weekend, the Cougars were winless in the Pac-10.

Then they played the Beavers. Not only did they win, they made it look fairly easy. The final score was 31-14, Washington State.

The Cougars scored first, but not until the second quarter. After a scoreless first quarter, two Washington State touchdowns made it 14-0 at halftime.

The Cougs' passing attack scored again in the third quarter, on a 33-yard toss from Jeff Tuel to Marquess Wilson, making it 21-0. Oregon State finally scored late in the third quarter on a pass from Ryan Katz to Markus Wheaton, but it was too little, too late.

The Cougars now have two wins on the season - the other was a non-league game against Montana.

Oregon State's Pac-10 record now stands at 3 wins, 3 losses. Overall, the Beavers have four wins and five losses on the season.

Elsewhere Saturday, 2nd-ranked Auburn survived an early scare against Georgia, to pull out a 41-31 win. Third-ranked TCU also won, beating San Diego State 40-35.

Turns out that Cal's coach, Jeff Tedford, was the very last offenisive cordinator for the Ducks. So the Bears had a real good understanding of Oregon's playbook. Additionally, Cal's secondary is the best in the Pac 10 and 3rd overall in the NCAA. Still, with all that said, I can't fucking believe they gave us that much of a fight. I do blelieve we may see another swap in the rankings tonight
