NEW YORK (AP)—Andy Pettitte(notes) has announced his retirement at Yankee Stadium.

With wife Laura sitting at his side at a news conference, Pettitte said Friday he had conflicting feelings about leaving the game. He said “it was an easy decision, but it wasn’t an easy decision.”

The 38-year-old left-hander says his body was in shape to pitch but “my heart’s not where it needs to be.”

Pettitte is a five-time World Series champion who finished 240-138 with a 3.88 ERA in 16 major league seasons, 13 of them with the Yankees. He set a major league record for postseason wins, going 19-10 with a 3.83 ERA.

As a Red Sox fan this is great news. I'm surprised by the decision though in all honesty. Andy still has it as far as I'm concerned. He's not a top 5 pitcher in the league, but his pick off move is still far above average and he's still got some good stuff. I'm not going to say he's leaving at his prime, but he's still got gas in the tank

I was hoping we'd have gotten Damon back, but that'll happen. The BoSox still look pretty good though...The Yanks had a bad offseason, but they're still loaded

The big question now circulating the news room ..."is Andy Pettitte a Hall Of Famer" ??

yep and they say about 40-50% of voters will not nominate him because he is entangled in this steroid mess, beit true or not, he is just fucked

He's not in the spotlight as some are, so maybe he can fly under the radar a little bit. He obviously won't make it the first or second year he's eligible, but maybe after 4 years he'll get in
