Johnson reportedly suffered the injury while rolling on the mat with a training partner while preparing for his upcoming fight with Marquardt, MMA Weekly reported.
Glenn Robinson, Johnson's manager, told MMA Weekly the fighter went to the doctor to get an MRI where physicians concluded surgery would not be required as Johnson's shoulder neither sustained any tears or significant damage.
It wasn't all good news for Johnson as doctors suggested resting the shoulder, which reportedly has only 20 to 30 per cent range of motion, for two to three weeks, MMA Weekly reports.
Despite trying to work through the injury and still fight, Johnson was forced to contact UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to formally pull out of the bout, while he will rest and wait for a new fight to be offered, MMA Weekly reports.
The UFC quickly announced Story as Johnson's replacement on their website, immediately changing the official event page with its new main event.
Rick 'The Horror' Story (13-3) is on a 6-fight win streak in the UFC and is freshly coming off a dominant performance at UFC 130 where he defeated perennial top 10 welterweight contender Thiago Alves by unanimous decision.
Marquardt (31-10-2) would have been making his debut as a welterweight against Johnson but will now have to shift gears if he's to prepare for his new opponent. The former seven time King of Pancrase and UFC middleweight contender has split his last four fights, losing to eventual number one contenders Chael Sonnen and Yushin Okami, while besting Rousimar Palhares and and most recently Dan Miller, according to Sherdog's fight finder.
UFC Live 4 will take place on June 26 in Pittsburgh, PA.
