Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres was released from his UFC contract on Thursday following a recent controversial “rape” remark that he posted to his Twitter feed.

Torres reportedly tweeted, “If a rape van was called a surprise van, more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.”

According to UFC president Dana White, Torres told UFC officials that it was just a joke. Well, the joke wasn’t so funny to White, leading him to fire Torres.

“If that’s your sense of humor, keep it at home around your buddies and keep it to yourself. It’s not something you put out on Twitter. And there’s no explanation for it. I can’t make any sense of it,” White said in an interview on MMAFighting.com.

Torres has since issued a public apology on his official website:

“I have a lot to be thankful for in my life, I have my beautiful wife and daughter, my family, my health, my gym, and in terms of my career, I succeeded to the biggest stage in the sport of mixed martial arts, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. I am very sorry for upsetting my bosses at the UFC, and also to my fans and everyone else who was upset by the language in my tweets. I understand it was wrong, and I meant no harm or disrespect. Given the chance, I will do whatever it takes to make things right. I am going to learn from this. I think life throws you opportunities that can make you a better person, and so that’s what I’m going to do here. That is how I am going to react. I am going to use this to improve myself, and I hope that my fans will continue to support me.”

Whether or not his statement will have any influence over White’s decision to release Torres from his contract remains to the be seen.

this is bullshit, I'm not saying I agree with what he said at all... but what he says and does in his time has nothing to do with his profession

when Vick was caught fighting pitbulls, that pissed me off real bad...but when they talked about dropping him from football that made no sense to me-it was outside of work

hell in my profession there has been talk at one point of running credit checks on us to "make a character judgement"... what does that have to do with a person's ability to perform their job??? A lot of the guys that I work with have shitty credit because of their ex-wives

Yea, I mean, he's a fighter, it's not like he's running for office or anything like that. I don't care what people say or do outside of their job, they're entitled to a life outside of work just the same as I am.

As far as using a credit check for a judge of character?? How does that make any sense? I mean, if a brain surgeon was the best brain surgeon out there and had bad credit, is that grounds for him to not be hired?

Amen on this-- my company has also been thinking of doing this too for the same reason.

I think these companies are looking for legal ways to get rid of certain employees. Which that is also a crock of shit if you ask me, but I guess they're finding the loop holes in the system

case in point.... Hank Williams Jr on monday night football for talking bad a bout Obama then the following week lee corso says fuck on college gameday and you never hear anything about it like it was swept under the rug. Monday night football just isn't the same anymore

a person got fired at my hospital for posting a link about how bad the new company is that recently bought out the hospital

I just don't see why Dana White would take that so personally, he's a fighter, not someone running for office or anything like that.

That could be, I've known a few people that have been raped or taken advantage of, but my point is that he's a fighter, blame it on being punch drunk or something, he's not supposed to be smart, he's paid to fight and either take a beating or give a beating.

lol well I would agree but saying a fighter is dumb or should be dumb s the same about saying that inreguards to lifters. A lot of the UFC guys have degrees, are engineers, teachers, politicians etc.
