After pushing oil through a whatman syringe filter last night for 6 hrs straight (first brew, had no idea how hard it is) I spoke to a friend who is a scientist and he first laughed before telling me to invest in a vacuum filter.

After looking around I dont understand the difference between bottle top filters and how they work 150ml Nalgene MF75 Bottle Top Filter - 45mm neck (Qty. 12) | Bottle Top Filters | Disposable Vacuum Filters | Filtration | Med Lab Supply
and complete systems like this
500ml filter klari-flex | Med Lab Supply
or this
1000ml Millipore Stericup Complete Filter (Qty. 12) | Filtration | Med Lab Supply
Also do they all require a hand pump?

Sorry guys alot of questions I know but money is tight and I dont want to mess this buy up.

Thankyou

The company itself wont help explain whats what and its a mystery to me. i searched the forums here first. Then searched google before posting. There is no instruction manual for the use of this equipment so I came here for some advice. have I posted in the wrong section? or is it just that its my first post? Im genuinly seeking advice about what i need to buy, cant afford to mess this up

Ok.. Ure in rite spot.. One they all require a vacuum pump and that can be found at auto parts store for bleeding brakes etc.. Possibly walmart.. Two I see the 500/ 1000 ml kits are just different in volume you plan to do at per time and include both upper and lower sterizied canisters .. The bottle top filter system needs a neck beaker with threads the same size as the filter itself.. It explains what size is needed on the site you posted..it's seems very self explanatory stuff in top container ,pump vacuum pump with hand and stuff sucked thru into lower canister..if you are not making over 100ml per time save your money and warm fluids up before filtration to ease your sore hands ..

Thankyou, Im actually from outside the US and they are the only company I could find that would ship to New Zealand even if its at a at a crazy price. Yeah Id done all my research on brewing test e and bought some .22 whatman filters and despite the oil being warm it was a night of pure hell. ***ml takes a while and ones hands tend to turn to jelly from squeezing on syringes so hard you think thay may burst!
I think I will avoid the bottle top filter system as what information I have gathered is they are prone to cracking when used by the inexperienced. Some questions, the 2 systems have different filters - a PES filter and a PVDF Membrane filter. Anyone have any experience using either. Will they both handle filtering oil with ba/bb? How many mls can I expext before having to change them?

Thanks Again

Ok sorry I thot we had a spanner..lol..
PES- polyethersulphone
PVDF- polyvinylidene di Flouride
If you look on steriltech.com or google these names it's easier to read than my scratch .. Most of these membranes filter a huge amount of fluids and when beginning to plug flow rate is down similar to water filter plugging with sediment..these may be cleaned and reused but read info first.. Hope this helps.. Are you making 50 gal drum? Lol..Kdn bro..

Yeah I know the post looked like spam so cheers for replying man, I will do my research on the pes and pvdf.

No mate not 50kg lol, but my powder supplier has a pretty large minimum buy. Id try elsewhere but he is reliable and can beat New Zealand Customs which is not easy as we are almost as bad as Australia. So I figure rather than do 5 or so small brews Id do one big one as I need the anabolics.

LOL, I hear ya bro.
If you want a quick and dirty method to save your fingers and hands, use a vise clamp (home depot), and a strong belt attached to 2 - 10 lbs dumbbells. then attached you vial to the syringe with duct tape, place that in the vise clamp and strap the weights on top of the syringe plunger. Works perfect every time! I just set it up with 60ml of (whatever your filtering), and come back in about 40mins and you'll have nice clear, sterile, golden liquid in the jug! Ill try to post a pic, cuz i know it might sound confusing.

Might? lol,

Thanks guys ended up with some klari-flex vacuum filters and a hand pump. Wow its a dream compaired to pushing oil through whatmans. Just wish I had powder, is a rare event to get some past Australian Customs. Anything from China gets looked at pretty hard and Ive only had the 2 chances to use the system... Both with great results

Hey Tim......use a .99 caulk gun from Home Depot. It is the easiest thing to use with a 100 ml filter and whatman on the end. I can filter about 100 ml in about 5 minutes and still got all my fingers afterwards.

That sounds like a set up for a 100ml mess across the room when the filter separates and splits brutha. Use a brand new pneumatic grease gun at 200psi.. It is slick..

I got the mess part, but the part about a pneumatic grease gun? Im going to have to put one in my hands to figure that out. Do you take the hose off?

.22 Whatman filter is too small. Get the next size up (.44 is best). Either way, its a bitch squeezing 100ml through a filter.
