Testosterone is a male sex hormone that the male and female body produce naturally, though in higher concentrations in males. This hormone is responsible for male characteristics such as a deep voice, enlarged muscle mass, growth of sex organs and male pattern hair growth. Supplemental testosterone therapy treats conditions such as andropause in males and breast cancer in females. The hormone can help stimulate puberty for boys with delayed puberty. Testosterone is available as an injection with a prescription from a physician.

Step 1
Use the medication as directed by a physician. Paying careful attention to the dose amount and frequency is important. Taking more than prescribed, or using the hormone supplement more often or for longer periods, increases the risk of developing adverse reactions from the therapy. Possible side effects include hot flashes and inflammation at the injection site, according to Drugs.com

Step 2
Gather supplies for injecting testosterone. Wash and dry your hands. Clean off the top of the testosterone bottle with an alcohol wipe and allow it to air dry.

Step 3
Pull back on the syringe to allow air into the syringe until the plunger reaches the scheduled dosage amount. Common dosages include 25 to 50 mg two to three times weekly for hormone replacement therapy; 50 to 100 mg three times weekly for treating breast cancer in women; and up to 100 mg once a month for up to six months for boys with delayed puberty, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Step 4
Insert the needle into the vial of testosterone and press in the plunger on the syringe to let air in. With the needle still in the vial, lift the vial into the air so the liquid settles in the top portion of the vial.

Step 5
Draw back on the plunger of the syringe and allow the liquid testosterone to enter the syringe at the correct dosage amount.

Step 6
Pull the syringe out of the vial and gently tap on the side of the syringe with a finger. This will allow any small bubbles to rise to the top of the syringe. Press the plunger gently to let the air out of the syringe.

Step 7
Find a site on the body for injecting the testosterone. A testosterone injection goes into a muscle, so the bicep, buttocks and thigh are suitable locations for the shot. Rotate injection sites with each shot.

Step 8
Clean the injection site with an alcohol wipe and allow it to air dry.

Step 9
Press the needle into the site and pull back on the plunger to verify that the needle is not in a vein. Blood will appear in the syringe if the needle hits a vein.

Step 10
Inject the testosterone into the muscle. Remove the needle from the injection site. Dispose the used needle in a sharps container.

Step 11
Rub the muscle at the injection site to help disperse the medication.
