Broken hip

My 81 yr old mom broke her hip and got a plate and screw set up. I'm thinkin of igf to her hip area as a test .. Is that ethical? Or is deca therapy something I should start with her..? I drove 5 hours to save the day. Do I deserve a break? Thanks for discussing my personal issues cause this site is full of advice..

Im sorry to hear that. Hope she is doing ok. Is she up for the treatment? Jpotch said studies in young people showed increased bone healing with deca, what about old folks?

there are a couple of studies on the use of deca on older women with hip fractures..... the general feeling is that "it can't hurt"....

the problem with elderly women and hip fractures isnt necessarily the healing of the fracture. its having the strength to recover and get out of bed and become ambulatory again. the morbitity rate in elderly women following a hip fracture is around 50% (depending on the study you read and how long they follow the patient in the study). A major complication of a geriatric hip fracture is pneumonia, secondary to not being ambulatory. A goal of the therapist is to have the patient gain enough strength as soon as possible to allow for walking with or without a walker... so again the deca helps a little with the healing of a fracture but also helps with regaining body mass... whether the physician decides to use an anabolic approach will depend on the history of the individual patient and how aggressive he or she is with their patients recovery..

Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS:

Osteoporosis is a major health problem worldwide. Low weight is a major risk factor for low bone mass and fractures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on bone tissue of protein-rich supplementation alone or in combination with nandrolone decanoate in lean elderly women after a hip fracture.
METHODS:

Sixty elderly women with BMI <24 kg/m(2) admitted to hospital due to a femoral neck fracture were randomised to a control group, to receive a protein-rich formula or to receive the same formula with an addition of nandrolone decanoate for 6 months. All patients received additional calcium and vitamin D. The effects after 6 and 12 months were measured by means of bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and with biochemical bone markers. Osteocalcin and C-terminal telopeptide of collagen-1 (CTX) were used to estimate bone formation and bone resorption, respectively.
RESULTS:

The analyses showed an increase in total body BMD at 6 and 12 months in patients who received protein-rich supplementation. Nandrolone decanoate did not appear to have any additional effect on BMD. Osteocalcin increased in all groups while no significant changes were found for CTX.
CONCLUSION:

The overall results of the study indicated that protein-rich supplementation given to lean elderly female hip fracture patients increased the total body BMD.

A pilot study of anabolic steroids in elderly patients with hip fractures.

Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the safety and efficacy of the anabolic steroid nandrolone in elderly patients with hip fractures.
DESIGN:

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING:

The orthopedic ward of a university teaching hospital.
PARTICIPANTS:

29 frail elderly females with hip fractures.
INTERVENTION:

Subjects received nandrolone 2 mg/kg (n = 15) or placebo (n = 14) by weekly injection for 4 weeks or until discharge.
MEASURES:

Baseline functional status was assessed by the Lawton-Brody ADL and IADL. Hemoglobin, transferrin, thyroid-binding prealbumin, albumin, liver function tests, creatinine, weight, MAMC, bioelectric impedance, standard anthropometrics and grip strength were measured at baseline and weekly intervals. Rehabilitation parameters and length of stay were recorded.
RESULTS:

The placebo and nandrolone groups were similar in age, although the control group had slightly higher baseline ADL scores. There was no difference between groups in biochemical parameters, anthropometrics, body composition, grip strength, rehabilitation end points or length of stay. One subject in the nandrolone group had a doubling of AST and was withdrawn from the study.
CONCLUSIONS:

Nandrolone can be given safely to frail elderly subjects with hip fractures but is likely to be of minimal benefit at the doses we employed.

OrgaNext Research: Addition of Vitamin D Improves Safety Profile of Nandrolone

June 25, 2012 08:42 AM Eastern Daylight Time
HOUSTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--A recent in vitro study by the Dutch company OrgaNext Research demonstrates that addition of vitamin D to nandrolone not only synergistically stimulates the proliferation of skeletal muscle stem cells, but also improves the safety profile of nandrolone.
OrgaNext Research is developing NDD, a new medicine combining nandrolone decanoate and vitamin D3 to support the recovery of elderly patients after hip fractures.
Each year 310.000 people in the United States and almost 800.000 people in Europe suffer from hip fractures and these numbers are expected to increase as the population ages. Hip fractures are a persistent cause of excessive morbidity, reduced life quality, and premature mortality among older people. Among survivors, 50% need assistance to walk and 90% need assistance to climb stairs after 1 year. Among women who lived independently before hip fracture, about half remain in long term care or need help with the activities of daily living one year after the event. Currently there is no drug intervention therapy available to address the debilitating consequences of slow and/or partial recovery of hip fracture patients.
OrgaNext Research tested the in vitro effects of the addition of vitamin D to nandrolone in human prostate cells, a model that is used to test undesired androgenic effects. They demonstrated that addition of vitamin D to nandrolone inhibits unwanted cell proliferation and therefore likely will improve the safety profile of nandrolone. The Dutch scientist Lenus Kloosterboer, PhD, will presents these data during the Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society (June 23-26) in Houston, Texas.
Kloosterboer: “Previously we demonstrated that the active metabolites of both vitamin D and nandrolone stimulate expression of their own and each other's receptors in human skeletal muscle and that proliferation of muscle stem cells is synergistically stimulated by both compounds. Now we found that addition of 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, the active metabolite of vitamin D3, to nandrolone reduces the androgenic activity of nandrolone in vitro. We expect that the combination is likely to have less androgenic side effects than nandrolone alone. We are very excited by these findings, because they hold the promise that we indeed can develop a low dose safe and effective therapy to help elderly patients to recover after hip fracture. The results of this study bring us closer to offering a clinical solution. Later this year we hope to start with our first in human studies with NDD.”

Update !! She's in p-therapy .. In her home town ,, full a hillbillys and can stand and put 50% on it and use a walker to walk a little to do things.. Thanks for the support !! I just came back from installing handicap grab bars throughout her bathrooms etc .. That handicap stuffs expensive it took a whole weeks paycheck . But o well.. I'm 5 hours away and my dip shit brother is an hour away and he's yet to visit her on one of his three days off.. Pure dick!
