Real world experiance vs science

Kinda like this, yrs ago I had a friend who was a mechanical engineer with a Bachelors and worked for Chrysler, smart guy. I also had another friend who had no academic education but grew up a motor head and could fix any combustible engine or anything on a car. So one guy had clean hands, knew the parts and so on and the next had dirty hands and could rebuild an engine in his sleep. My jeep had transfer case issues and the former friend looked at it and after 2 hrs told me it was ruined and buy a new one. The latter looked at the next week and had it fixed in no time at all, avoiding me paying big $$
