There are scads of steroids users around the world, but none more blatant (and abusive) than pro bodybuilders. The vast majority of them won't talk about steroids in public, and if you ask one about their personal steroid use during a seminar, they're liable to juggernaut their way through the crowd and squat hump you to death with their massive frames. However, get one alone, one that trusts you, promise him anonymity, and he'll probably tell you anything you want to know. Most of the time, their somewhat proud of their abuses, as if taking vast amounts puts them in the same category of risk takers as those guys that jump over busses with their motorcycles.Testosterone will occasionally publish interviews with some of these guys from different parts of the world, mostly out of a morbid curiosity about what kind of pharmaceutical terrors these guys are willing to endure to get the freakish look so highly coveted by most hardcore bodybuilding fans. Our second interview is with an Italian professional bodybuilder who has had, at times, some fairly significant, but not serious, side effects from the wide variety of drugs he's taken. For reasons that will become clear later on in the interview, we've given him the initials "ES."Here's what ES had to say:T: What's your competitive background?ES: I was the Italian National Champion for three years, and I've competed professionally in NABBA and IFBB pro shows.T: How much do you weigh now?ES: I now weigh 102 kg (224 pounds) at 7% body fat and at a height of 179 cm (5'11''). I just finished a pro show three weeks ago [this interview is a few months old].T: How did you get involved with steroids?ES: I'm one of those guys that was extremely ectomorphic. I weighed 60 kg (132 pounds) at a height of 179 cm of height (5'11") when I started training in my home town of Northern Italy. I started training after seeing a Maciste movie on national TV [Maciste is an Italian B-movie character based on Hercules]. However, after three years of consistent training, I only weighed 69 kg.By then, I decided to try steroids. My family doctor put me on my first cycle. He was supportive of my bodybuilding efforts; probably because he wanted to score points with my mother rather than having any real interest in my goals. He put me on Megrasevit tablets. I was taking 10 mg a day for 20 days, followed by 10 days off. He also gave me B12 shots to boost my appetite, along with the herb Fenugreek, which he claimed had anabolic properties.Of course, if I knew then what I know now, I could have done much better. Now that I'm familiar with Charles Poliquin's principles, I now realize why I didn't put much weight on. I basically trained like an idiot all these past years. It's surprising how much weight I managed to put on, despite my stupid training methods. Knowing what I know now, I probably could have gotten up to at least 85 kg without using drugs. I was way too much into the 12-15 reps, 30-sets-per-body-part, pump-the-muscles-up bullshit. Since I started training heavier, I've gained about 3 kg in the last month.T: What sort of progress did you make initially?ES: After four months of this aforementioned drug and workout regime, I moved up to an impressive 73 kg (152 pounds), but in my mind, I was on my way to beat Lee Haney at the Olympia!T: Wow, 152 pounds at 5'11". What a physique!ES: Hey, don't laugh at me, I had always been underweight, so in my case, I was making some very serious strides. Plus, the stuff I was taking, the Megrasevit, was designed for the geriatric market and not physique athletes. But, as you can see, even a weak anabolic made an ectomorph like me gain weight.T: What's the heaviest you've ever weighed?ES: About 105.5 kg (232 pounds), but my body fat was still under 8%. I don't like bulking up, and probably couldn't do it anyhow, even if I lived off tortellini, risotto and gelatto.T: Well, you certainly made big body weight jumps over the years. What sort of cycles did you do after that first one?ES: My doctor was real smart about it. We switched to four oxandrolone tablets per day?three weeks on, one week off?for another four months. I got a bit stronger but I only gained another 2 kg. I wanted to use some stronger, more androgenic stuff, but my doctor was very cautious.Later, I went on two 50 mg injections of Winstrol Depot per week for eight weeks. By that time, I was tipping the scales at 78 kg.Then, my natural testosterone levels started to lower, so the good doctor put me on HCG and had me lay off anabolics for four months. I felt miserable, my joints were aching all over, and I was depressed. I couldn't even screw the Scandinavian girls that came through my town as tourists or "filles au pair" [nannies]. Luckily, I didn't lose much.A friend I met in bodybuilding competitions introduced me to a doctor in Balzano who was into more aggressive-type cycles.T: Can you elaborate on that?ES: He put me on two Testovis (testosterone propionate) a week, eight oxandrolone per day, and 200 mg of Primobolan a week for twelve weeks in a row. I would take six weeks off and repeat the cycle.I felt great because I was making real progress for the first time. The doctor also had me use a lot of aminos and some German protein powder enriched with lysine and many vitamin and mineral supplements.T: What sort of progress did you make?ES: I went up to 85 kg (187 pounds) I was really happy, and for the first time in my life, people started to notice me. They began asking me if I was a rugby player, stuff like that. American bodybuilders might think it's an insult to be mistaken for a rugby player, but it's not. Here in Italy, bodybuilders are still considered marginal athletes, nowhere near as "great" as rugby or soccer players. They sure don't get the same positive attention as in America. Over here in Italy, only kids marvel at nice physiques; and that's probably because they read comics like the Phantom and Batman where the hero has a good physique.T: What happened after that?ES: After two years of work with the new doctor, I got my weight up to 93 kg. And I won my division (under 90 kg) in the Italian National Championships. After that, we started getting really serious. I wanted to do well on the International scene, so he put me on a really advanced drug cycle in preparation for a contest for all the Latin countries. Then I took 10 days off from the steroids, but began shooting 1500 IU of HCG every two days during the 10-day off period. Right after that, I moved on to the next cycle.I was also using 1-3 Cytomel per day throughout the cycle. With all the injections I was getting, I developed scar tissue in my delts, quads, and glutes, but the doctor still insisted on daily injections. At the end of the cycle, I looked like a piece of Swiss cheese.T: Are there any drugs you don't like?ES: Halotestin gives me dragon breath. Plus, it made me too aggressive. I already drive like a maniac. On Halotestin, I thought I was Fangio [an Italian race car driver]. Even though I was only driving a Fiat, I raced it like I was aboard a Countach.I hate Deca-Durabolin, too. For me, it's basically an injectable castration agent. It made me very puffy, and for some reason, very sluggish. In fact this Danish girl I had picked up flicked teasingly at my empty scrotum when I was on Deca. It was quite humiliating. [There it is! ES stands for "empty scrotum."]The Polish Omnadren made me very puffy and irritable, yet I don't have the same problem with Sustanon.T: What are your top three drugs for adding size?ES: I find Parabolan, Sustanon 250, and Winstrol Depot to be the best drugs for gaining mass.T: Winstrol? Really? I can understand the Sustanon and the Parabolan, but Winstrol?ES: For some reason, I tend to react very well to it. I always feel full and energetic on Winstrol. Plus, it boosts my libido like you wouldn't believe. In fact, the first time I broke the 100 kilo barrier in body weight, I was using 4 Parabolan a week, four Sustanon, and 700 mg of Winstrol Depot per week. I felt just great. You have to remember that different people often react differently to different steroids.T: Interesting. How about your top three drugs for pre-contest use?ES: Cytomel, Winstrol and Primobolan. Cytomel really helps me burn the fat away, and I can see a difference within days after taking it. I never exceed three tabs a day for periods of three weeks at a time. For me, Winstrol is good both for size build-up and pre-contest use. And I think everybody on the pro circuit agrees that on a restricted caloric regimen, Primobolan has no equivalent for helping you melt the fat away while keeping your hard earned muscle mass on.T: Do you rely much on growth hormone?ES: Growth hormone is easily available here on the Italian black market. Doctors are quite keen on prescribing it, but I've never exceeded the two IU every two days. Of course, that may be why I'm not as massive as my colleagues. But, even at that relatively small dosage, it sure does give the muscles a high-quality look.T: What do you mean? Can you give me an example?ES: I just get more fibrous, for a lack of a better word. It makes dieting way easier to handle, too.T: Have you experienced any serious, long-term side effects from your extensive drug regimen?ES: As far as the reproductive system goes, no problem there. My wife is expecting our third child. Apparently the fenugreek has helped to keep my sperm count up after all these years of anabolic use. As far as any other side effects, my blood fats [cholesterol] tend to rise particularly high when I'm on stanozolol, and that's unfortunate since it's one of my favorite drugs. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that I always go off anabolics for four months in a row every year. I think that's the secret for avoiding any serious side effects.T: Thanks for you time, ES.ES: Sure.
