Filtration

parabellum

Hello Gentalmen.
Wanted to see if a can get some opinions on filtration.
Complete filter units...fully assembled
Vs
Whatman syringe filters
I feel it depends on the amount your making.... but I may be incorrect.

It really depends on the quantity of gear your brewing to justify the cost which is a tad higher than syringe filters. They both do the same job as long as you keep a consistently sterile working environment with each process. If money isn't an issue, then the larger units are nice. Unfortunately, money is usually an issue at my house. lol

Presser, what parabellum is referring to is a generally polycarbonate vacuum filtration unit consisting of a upper container with filtration module which screws onto a receving flask at the bottom - all supplied sterile (gamma or ethylene oxide sterilization) with an included sterilized cap for the receiving container. Several suppliers make them, and they are quite effective, as long as you have a source of vacuum.

i think a couple a hundred ml with a whatman or 3 is fine and only the time factor really at least with a vacume pump you can just set and leave it and just keep the psi high and a hand held vacume pump is cheap enough i guess..me i just use a silicone gun/gunk gun and a 20ml sryinge..

Yeah. I'm still using the same method as well. Someday I'll get tired of it and step it up I suppose..... til' then, I suppose my thumbs will be red and sore.... ;)

THe only major advantage of a filtration unit, depending cost of unit versus syringe filters, is capacity. You can easily filter more material with a filter unit than with a syringe filter. Of course it is more expensive, so it becomes a matter of costing it out per ml, and the cost of the inconvenience of changing filters.

Can you post a link or info here for a decent filtration unit? I'd like to research more on them.

I like to use a .45 bottle top, then .22 syringe filter into vials

Double filter. And usually works out to less filters used, cauSe once ran through the .45, it will all usually run through a .22 whatman. Instead of using a new whatman for each 50mls

I used to also use a .22 bottle top. But don't like the air exposure during the final transfer.

I feel this is the most sterile way to do it. I also bake the empty 'sterile' vials prior to the final transfer just to be sure.

Hope this helps

Then only time I use a syringe filter is to make 10ml of a new recipes just Incase it doesn't work. Any other time I use vacuum filters but looking to up grade to funnel filters.
