"Ultimate Fighter" season 5 competitor Corey Hill died on Friday due to complications from fungal pneumonia. He was 36 years old.

Hill's wife Lauran confirmed her husband's passing to TMZ.com. The cause of death was cardiac arrest due to a collapsed lung as a result of the illness.

"Corey was a loving husband and devoted father," Lauran Hill said. "He was such a strong role model for our children, and would do anything to keep them safe and happy and healthy.

"(He was) a fighter till the end."

Hill had been battling pneumonia for days and erroneous reports about his death came out on Thursday including a statement from the UFC confirming his passing. Hill continued to fight to stay alive through the night, but he was pronounced dead on Friday afternoon.

Hill was a part of the fifth season of "The Ultimate Fighter" in which he competed alongside a laundry list of top names including Nate Diaz, Joe Lauzon and Gray Maynard.

Hill fought in the UFC a total of three times with a 1-2 record overall before suffering a gruesome broken leg in his final fight for the promotion against Dale Hartt in 2008. Hill's injury was similar to the one suffered by former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Hill returned to fighting just over a year after suffering the broken leg although he never returned to the UFC again.

Hill last fought in February before suffering health problems that put him in the hospital just recently.

Hill is survived by his wife and three children.

this really hit me hard. i trained with Corey for 6 months or so before he made it on to the ultimate fighter. defmetallifter you're right brother he was super intense! i'd be dying in the corner after a round and Corey's crazy ass would be jumping rope, doing jumping jacks, push ups, or some crazy shit yelling "that's why we work!!!!!!" and stuff like that over and over lol, you got to see it on the show a bit. he and i were both really new to the sport at the time, this is 05. i'll always remember how he was basically the baddest dude in the gym but he didn't know shit about the ufc. he couldn't afford cable or ppv's, he traded stuff like that to give more to his wife and kids. he didn't really know who dana white was, had no idea who matt hughes was, lol it was funny. he was a good wrestler in college and wasn't ready to trade a career in athletics for a job behind a desk so he gave mma a shot. he was the kind of guy you felt like you'd been best friends with for years after talking to him for 5mins. tough writing this thinkin about him actually. we weren't super close or anything but i did know this man and he was a great guy. RIP Corey. way too young.

damn thats pretty cool though brutha, sounds like he was a really good guy! He kick your ass a few times or vice versa?

lol I'd hold my own kinda until i gassed, which didn't take long and that's a terrible weakness against that dude. he had a collegiate wrestling background and i was a fan of the sport lol. Corey had cardio for weeks, he didn't get tired. seriously when training was done we'd all be dead but he'd be doing burpee's in the corner yelling crazy shit to himself, he was intense. it's tough to deal with a guy that tall too.

i was in good shape and a close friend (army ranger) was set to ship out soon who had mma on his to do list. he hit me up knowing i'd be up for it and wouldn't you know it the man Corey Hill was there soon after we got there. i really wanted to see him excel, he was deserving in my book. put in the work and had the heart.

That's cool you worked out with him. He was one ripped dude with tons of potential for the sport.
