<!-- react-text: 61 -->Adenosine Triphosphate(ATP) is the body's energy "currency" and it supplies chemical energy to carry out thousands of reactions in the body. A few years ago, a supplement company tried to release an oral ATP product, claiming it can increase ATP levels. The problem is that your stomach is very acidic, pH around 2. This acidic environment can cause ATP to hydrolyze(broken down by water) via an acid catalyst. The phosphate groups on ATP are the parts of the molecule that supplies the energy through phosphate-oxygen bonds. If the phosphate bonds get hydrolysed before it gets into your blood, it essentially loses its purpose. According to both of these studies, ATP is not orally bioavailable and the phosphate bonds get broken down before they can hit your bloodstream, as predicted. 32 Subjects were given doses of ATP at 0mg, 250mg, 1250mg or 5000mg for 28 days. Blood tests showed that there were no changes in blood or plasma ATP concentrations. Even worse, the main metabolite found was Uric acid(levels increased 50% vs placebo), which can build up in your joints and lead to gout. I have personally tried one of these ATP products and I didn't notice any benefits from it during exercise. <!-- /react-text -->
