Esther Lin, MMA Fighting Jorge Masvidal may have come up short in his bid for the UFC welterweight title, but there are no shortage of champions looking for a piece of the “BMF” belt holder. Masvidal is now set to face his next one, though it’s outside Masvidal’s normal purview. This Wednesday, Masvidal will be taking on American Cornhole League champion Cody Henderson in a special match at the 2020 ACL World Championships.
Now, many of you may be wondering, ‘What?!” and with good reason. Masvidal is one of the best fighters in the world but that has little bearing on a game that revolves around tossing beanbags into a hole cut out of a four-foot piece of plywood. Well, according to the ACL website, this specialty event was conceived of by the ACL and Masvidal’s team after Masvidal and Henderson enjoyed a friendly game of cornhole in January on Radio Row during Super Bowl week. Unsurprisingly, the ACL champion dominated “Gamebred,” and when the ACL reached out to Masvidal about coming to speak at the World Championships this year, instead the BMF champion wanted to compete in some fashion. Ultimately, they created a special rules match for Masvidal to rematch Henderson.
The game will be “a shortened version of ACL’s round limit shootouts that surround this event and integrates MMA themes.” In lieu of the normal ACL 10-round limit shootouts, Masvidal’s match will only be five rounds and he will be spotted 15 points to start. If either player reaches 21 points by the end of the fifth round, that will be considered a knockout and it no player wins by the end of regulation, the bout will go to a judge’s decision (AKA, the scoreboard). It’s a pretty major lead that Masvidal is being spotted and one he believes will be too big to overcome.
“I have the fastest KO in MMA fighting history and now I am going for the fastest KO in Cornhole history,” Masvidal said. “Cody will regret spotting me 15 points.”
Probably not, though. The speculative odds the ACL released for the promotional bout have Masvidal as a +250 underdog to win by decision and a whopping +900 to actually get to 21 points. But even if Masvidal gets blown out by Henderson, it won’t matter as the BMF champion is clearly just enjoying the opportunity to keep broadening his reach. He even used this event to take a shot at his most recent opponent, welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
