The first Dana White’s Contender Series event of 2020 has lost a matchup 24 hours before it was set to begin.
Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that the lightweight bout between Kenny Cross and Damonte Robinson will no longer take place at Tuesday night’s event at the UFC APEX, following an initial report from journalist James Lynch.
One source close to the situation confirmed that an eye injury lead to Robinson not being cleared to compete.
Cross is one of the top 155-pound prospects in the US and was set to enter the bout with a four-fight finish streak. “The Boss” was originally scheduled to face Kevin Syler at the event before Syler was forced to withdraw following a positive COVID-19 test.
Robinson took the fight on four days’ notice and ended up missing weight by 0.5 pounds. The Ohio native was set to forfeit 20-percent of his purse to Cross.
Dana White’s Contender Series 27 will move ahead with four fights, headlined by a light heavyweight bout between UFC veteran Dustin Jacoby and Ty Flores.
Check out the updated card below:
Dustin Jacoby vs. Ty Flores
Uros Medic vs. Mikey Gonzalez
Luis Rodriguez vs. Jerome Rivera
Jose Flores vs. Jordan Leavitt
