where can i get a pad for my straight bar? for doing squats.

try a towel.. fold it up and roll it around the bar... there's a maker of one that's made of neoprene and some soft fabric with Velcro but i don't know it.. i just use a towel..

LMAO @ wussy section. violator there's a thing made called the manta ray molded plastic for doing squats I've tried it prety nice. Gaylans sporting goods store carrys them and the pads too. May have a web site everyone does now adays.

OK,
Excuse my original dismissive one line response, I was gobsmacked at the time. Here are a few reasons why you should NEVER pad the bar!

Thicker bar means more travel on rotation. If the bar turns a few degrees coming up you can keep it in place no problem. If something four inches thick rotates a few degrees you will lose the bar. Pleasant!

Toweling raises the bar and moves it off the traps to the rear. This turns a regular squat in to a "higher than high bar" squat and a power squat in to a high bar squat. The higher the bar the more leverage created by the length of your spine and therefore the greater the resistance. Higher bar placement also minimises involvment of the glutes and hips and increases quad involvement and shear at the knee. This is not NECCESARILY a bad thing, but be aware of it. If you do wish to increase quad involvement and take stress of the hips and glutes then use a manta ray or a safety squat bar, both of which are far safer than a towel or other form of padding.

A squat bar is center knurled for a reason, to increase the grip / traction of the bar against the traps. Any thing between the bar and the traps negates this effect and increases the liklihood of the bar slipping on the traps.

Finally, the powerlifters are laughing at you....hehehe.

OK, thats my thoughts on the matter, squat on.

Cheers,
G
