Thoughts on sodium?

We all know that one of the issues of eating out is the ridiculous amount of sodium in most restaurant foods. I typically eat out twice a week so the majority of the foods I eat are bought at the grocery store. I buy low sodium tuna packets (140 mg) and low-ish sodium tuna cans (180 mg/serving) because they are 7 oz and quite a bit cheaper at Costco. Even still, I have trouble keeping my daily sodium intake below 3200 mg, especially while on a bulking diet. I have heard that for athletes a little more sodium can be a good thing, as much of it is lost in sweat but I also know that too much sodium can raise bp, which would be especially troublesome on cycle. So I would like some input: what does your daily sodium intake look like? Do you work harder to reduce sodium on cycle? Any other thoughts/suggestions on the subject are welcome.

I don’t really pay much attention to my sodium intake, not in any real measurable way anyhow, but I also know its pretty damn low on average as im a creature of habit and eat pretty much the same things day in and day out lol.

Now when I start a new cycle and ramp things up and stack them, and begin to hit it hard in that area, I actually take in more sodium as I think it helps me, I feel fuller, and I seem to be able to hold the water retention in my musclebellies much better with raised sodium than I would otherwise without the added sodium, as without the added sodium I tend to smooth over as in the water tends to be more subcutaneous in nature aka spills over.

Now im not sure if that has shit to do with shit lol but its my thinking anyhow and I feel like it works for me

I don't really pay attention to mine, either. Although, if I do a show this year, I'll have to start paying attention to it.

I dont intentionally avoid or salt my foods, but I do add it to bland foods with the logic the better tasting the more I will eat. I always thought salt got a bad rep, after all water in muscles is volumization equating to fuller looking muscles. Now the final wk of pre-contest it comes in to play

Excellent, trying to get my diet dialed in for my long awaited bulk and now I can focus my energy/worries on something more constructive so thanks for the replies!

I don't bother keeping track of sodium. I think, as with most things, that things get out of wack when we start refining mineral salt into table salt. I use all mineral salt as much as possible when home.

theres studies out there that show that sodium in fact doesnt increase bp. ill try to find them and post a link. i dont watch sodium at all. for us athletes its a necessity.
heres a good video explaining sodium.

Yes it increases bp. I gotta watch mine at times but I eat my wife's cooking so...
Most bp meds the thiazide's, I think I said it right are to suppress this and in turn reduces bp.
Now I try and keep eye on it meaning I choose sonething with hardly any like tea instead of soft drink and yogurt over pork skins. Where I live it all about good food and it all has white rice and flavor.

Not exactly body doesn't work that way. The more I sweat the more a swell. Kidneys control how much sodium will be put into blood to make us hold more water.

Balance your potassium intake and you're good. It's not that sodium is bad it's when the sodium/potassium ratio is off. Also try to get good raw, unprocessed salt.

When water is lost kidneys will re-absorb sodium. Hense why swelling is likely from sweating more. I am not taking about dehydration I am taking about the way I work in heat day in and out in summer. I well swell from too much sodium in summer.
The problem with sodium is nobody now of days is balancing it. Lol. Recommended amounts are no more than 6 grams. More than that can increase kidney problems. Most people get 8-10grams a day.

I need to eat more bananas. I did start taking my calcium mag zinc again at night. And multi vitamin b6 bcomplex fish oil coq10 vit c garlic nac and prolly more joint products lol. Got to thinking I put on more water since stopping mag at around 600 night wonder if that interfered with sodium

Bananas are really quite low in potassium when you look at the daily requirements. Try coconut water and tart cherry juice NOT from Concentrate. Dried apricots. Vegetable juice medleys. They have very high values in the 400-900mg per 8oz range. 1cup dried apricots has 1000mg

I eat dried apricots on a daily basis for this exact reason when exercising heavily in the summer.

This is great info, I'm already a fan of coconut water (especially with pulp) and I'll start adding dried apricots to my diet.
