Sceletium tortuosum aka Kanna is an herb that contains some very interacting nootropic and psychoactive alkaloids. It was shown to interact with at least 77 different receptors Traditionally, kanna has been used to elevate mood and as an anxiolytic(anti-anxiety), with some reports of a slight euphoric feeling. Kanna works as a natural antidepressant, due to its ability to block the reuptake of serotonin(similar to how SSRIs work). One of the main alkaloids mesembrine, as well as a few other derivatives in Kanna are responsible for this action, as well as acting as a monoamine(serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline)releasing agent in higher doses. In addition, Kanna also acts as a phosphodiesterase 4(PDE4) inhibitor, where PDE4 regulates mood, long-term memory, and wakefulness. This pathway may also explain its anti-anxiety properties. I’ve been playing around with Kanna for over 2 years and I really like its effects, especially in higher doses. The problem is that it’s pretty expensive(the branded kanna Zembrin is $4000/kg), but don’t worry- it will be in an upcoming GC x @myoblox product! The studied dose of Kanna extracts is 25mg of a 2:1 extract standardized to 0.45% alkaloids.
