Say NO to Arginine
theguerillachemist
Almost every preworkout over the last 15 years have contained some form of Arginine. It was the original vasodilator and was in every "NO" product. We now have much better options for a pump. The researchers in the study found something that should confirm to supplement companies that Arginine shouldn't be used in preworkouts anymore. Trained athletes who ingested 6g of Arginine before working out had a 41% decrease in GH and IGF-1 levels postworkout.
Your body naturally releases GH and other growth factors after a workout to help repair and rebuild muscle tissue. Taking Arginine before a workout may significantly hinder your body's natural anabolic response to training! With so many better options for pumps, including citrulline malate and my favorite, organic/inorganic nitrates, arginine is outdated. In fact, citrulline has been shown to raise arginine(and thus NO) plasma levels greater than arginine and nitrates raise them even higher.

Never heard that, but will look into it.
Citrulline Malate Side Effects
There are no negative side effects reported from L-citrulline usage. In rare instances, malic acid has been reported to cause transient nausea and/or diarrhea.
Because L-citrulline has antihypertensive mechanisms, citrulline malate should not be used in conjunction with drugs used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
CM should not be used with nitrates or PDE-5 inhibitors either. This type of usage may result in hypotension (low blood pressure).
Conclusions
Citrulline malate effects on health are still under clinical investigation. It is being studied for its effects on blood lactate, blood glucose, plasma arginine, plasma glutamine, plasma nitrate, training volume, urea, reactive protein, cholesterol, blood flow, blood pressure, creatinine, growth hormone and more.
Women who are pregnant or nursing are advised not to use citrulline malate supplements. Not enough data is available to determine CM safety in these groups.
It is best to speak with a doctor who knows about your health history before beginning to supplement with citrulline malate. Although CM is generally safe for most healthy users, not all natural substances affect all people in the same ways.

I make my own preworkout with non-flavored citrulline malate and beta alanine. Works quite nice, with no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. Doesn't taste very good, but works and helps me shred.
