There is a fairly new area for obesity that involves an enzyme known as nicotinamide N-methyltransferase(NNMT), which is known to be unregulated in white adipose tissue. NNMT helps regulate the detoxification of certain compounds like methionine(homomethionine), via methylation/demethtlation, as well as pathways that are involved in energy regulation. New research for NNMT inhibitors have led to 1 extremely strong candidate for treatment known as 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium(5-amino-1MQ).This molecule has demonstrated the ability to be highly selective for NNMT, without affecting other enzymes involved in methyl transferring. 5-amino 1MQ or placebo was given to obese mice at 20mg/kg everyday for 11 days. The 5-amino 1MQ group lost 35% of their white adipose tissue mass, very significant compared to placebo. These mice also had 30% lower cholesterol levels, and a reduction in adipogenesis by 70%! More research is needed for sure, but these results are extremely promising. Anecdotally, people who have been experimenting with 5-amino 1MQ have noted weight/fat loss. I’m exited to see more studies on this compound and discussing it with
