I've been unemployed since Jan 1 after being let go after being hurt at work and being told that I could no longer continue by the surgeon. In that time I've gotten all the way to the final interview 3 times with big insurance companies. All 3 times I thought I did really well. I'm articulate and I got my license 6-20 and one of the advanced system certifications on my own. I just found out today that I was again not chosen. I seriously feel like maybe it's my size.. I wear nice slacks and a nice button up shirt and tie. Everything is fitted and I look very proffessional yet I am passed over again and again. The last position was a "trainee" position. During the course of the training you have to successfully get your 6-20 License after so many attempts and then you go on to learn system stuff... I already have my license... I already have an advanced user cert... I'm feeling really beat down... I finally got a new coat and had it fitted.. I'm hoping maybe that would help...
This last interview they showed me all around including the amazing on site gym... it was pretty obvious they new I was a bodybuilder...

Dude I'm in the same boat with the oil and gas industry.

they probably think your just a meat head lol and yeah there is a stigma for sure when it comes to bodybuilders, but maybe this wasnt the case here brutha! Maybe you have been passed up 3 times because somehting better is around the corner, thats how i have to look at things in life personally, otherwise i would go nuts lmao

I keep telling myself that, but it's getting rough. I want to be the provider... not a dependant...
It's a huge blow to my self confidence. I may have to go back to school to finish my Bachelors. Most Companies won't even consider an applicant without a 4 year degree... Silk has been super supportive, but I feel like I shouldn't be doing anything other than tracking down a new job

I think you just said it. Not having a college degree compared to other candidates even with your license and certifications will seriously hurt you in job searching. I've heard from some people who say, "it's just a piece of paper," referring to the diploma, but in reality, a college education actually gives you greater perspective and insights to a lot more than just having training for a particular field of work. The one thing employers say again and again is that they wish their candidates had a more rounded education. Even when I am looking for people to hire, if all else was equal, I would choose the one with the degree over the one without.

So I know it may not be the thing you want to hear, but if you had the bachelors degree, I'd bet you would had been hired long ago. There's nothing wrong with going back to school if you need it. If you do get hired soon without the degree, you should promise yourself to get that degree as soon as possible. Often employers will reimburse for education if it is related to your job so take advantage of it if you can.

well im with BigZ, it was prolly the degree thing, if you want to be an employee you need a degree no matter how worthless it is, otherwise you have to work for yourself, good news is minumum wage should be paying about 200K$ a year soon lol, so you can flip burgers and drive a benz, gotta love this country lmao

That was the plan with this last position... I'm going to schedule a meeting with an advisor... I have 80-90 credit hours and the Law Enforcement program is 40... plus alot of the requisite courses we take are college courses in ethics and such. Hopefully I can get into a program that will allow me to test out

if you have a college degree, that tells the employer two things-one, your in debt or was at some point and need to work...two, you can be trained

It's a hard pill to swallow. I feel like I'm throwing money away, but man everyone wants the degree. I planned on doing it at some point and I may be able to land a much higher paying job with it, so it's kind of obvious what I have to do. Maybe I'll IDENTIFY with being black so I can get some financial aid. Hell that got that one chick to the head of the NAACP..

Slap on some tan dye, put yr Al Sharpton shirt on and wear yr pants half down the crack of yr ass and you be good to go!

I was in the insurance game for quite a while and without my bachelors I wouldn't have got a second look. What sent me to the top of the list was having my Masters I believe. I had my series 6 and 63 then got my series 7 then built a really nice book and sold it all lol. After you get your degree more doors will open hang in there.

If you can get lucky and get a with current qualifications, most big companies have college programs. They will pay for you to finish your degree and depending on the field even pay for you to get your masters.

yeah my wife is a teacher and they reimbursed for master degree, and my sister-in-law just got her doctorate and i am pretty sure her job paid for it, she works for dyfus or child protective srvices, some shit like that, most carreer type jobs will pay or reimburse you

That's how this last company was and that was my plan, but I've given it this long and it hasn't worked out. Its pretty clear to me that without a degree this is what I'm going to face regardless of my intelligence or experience. I went to the local college yesterday and had them go through my transcripts. Since I originally went for business and then went to the Law Enforcement Academy half of my credits are not going to apply regardless of which way I go. The Advisor was extremely cool. Wounded vet and prior EMT. He laid it all out for me. He even gave me his cell phone number. I'm going to "apply" today and enroll full time for summer classes. If I really buckle down I can have my Bachelor's in 1 1/2 years. Then hopefully I can get a decent position and go on to get my Masters.
He made some valid points. He said that the person who actually makes the decision looks at your resume and then talks to the people that interviewed you.... but he said that should an applicant not work out no one is going to question hiring the guy with the most formal education. It's a cover your ass strategy which I'm very familiar with... really can't blame them. At the end of the day everyone wants to keep their job and their lifestyle. No one is sticking their head out for anyone.
It kills me that at some point I'm going to have to sit in a classroom with some snot nose liberal 20 year old Obama voters and listen to some libtard professor tell me about his opinions... at least that's how it was at FSU and it was terrible
