ORLANDO — The autopsy of Omar Mateen confirms the Fort Pierce gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando nightclub last month was likely a long-term user of steroids, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday, quoting two federal law-enforcement officials.

The autopsy also showed Omar Mateen was HIV-negative, the Sentinel said. The autopsy results have yet not been made public, and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office declined to comment on the newspaper’s report.
Mateen fatally shot the 49 people at Pulse, a gay nightclub south of downtown Orlando, in the early morning hours of June 12. He was then killed in a shootout with local police.
The steroid-use discovery comes after Mateen’s ex-wife said he had a history of steroid use, and one coworker said that use might have begun as long ago as 2006. The Post reported last month that he admitted to steroid use on his 2015 application to the Law Enforcement Academy at Indian River State College. His application was denied.
High doses of steroids can help build muscle and body mass but also have been linked to increased irritability and aggression, the National Institute on Drug Abuse has found.
The HIV-negative finding follows reports that one of Mateen’s former Indian River State College classmates told The Post that he believed the gunman was gay and that Mateen had tried to pick him up once at a bar. Anyone can contract the HIV virus, but gay and bisexual men are “the nation’s most severely affected population,” the institute said.
Some reports following the shootings said regular patrons at Pulse had seen him there before. The FBI has been unable to find evidence to corroborate such claims, the Sentinel reported.
