Training when you are sick.

I know that when I am sick, the best for me is to have mybutt parked at the house. I have gone to the gym when I was sick before andpushed through a workout, but in the long run it only set me back. Now in myopinion there is a big difference in having a cold and being sick. Living in the south, if I didn’t go to thegym every time I had a sinus infection, I would miss more than I go. To me that is a cold, but being sick means running a fever, head hurting, puking, sneezing your head off and coughing. Who wants to be in a gym with someone likethat?

So the next time you are sick, stay home!! Everyone at the gym will be thankful that you did.

I don't get sick often at all but when I do I mostly push through. The workout get body going makes blood flow and stimulates immune system. Same goes for work.
Alot of days staying home makes me feel crappy worse once I am up and going it subsides.
That's me though not much knocks me down but guilt that I could've pushed and and didn't. I feel worse in way of depression and let myself down if I give up too easy.
I always found making myself perform get breathing going and clears me uposted.

If I have fever of coarse staying.

Good advice dude, we will follow your example, it should be through our own example the value in treating one another as we wish to be treated! :)

Like I stated, big difference between having a cold and being sick.
Yes true, if I'm REALLY sick, it boils down to this for me:

Take 3-4 days off lifting, come back and within maybe a week, right back like it never happened
OR
Lift thru it, hoping it will pass, when in fact, I'm lowering my resistance levels, and lifting sucks, and have sub par workouts for at least 10 days not to mention the suffering

In cases of truly sick, the former is the choice for me

PS THis is why I rarely take scheduled layoffs, the layoffs occur when I am sick or get injured.

I've had a nasty head cold this week and felt guilty that I missed a couple days. My only difference is my gym is my garage which isn't heated and living in cold weather sucks. I throw a heavy shirt, hoodie and a hat and hit it anyways. I sucked up the cold today and busted out a pretty good shoulder workout sweating my ass off while it's 30 degrees outside. Don't quite know what my point is heads all stuffed up. Just ignore me lol.

Man I'm just dragging my ass out of bed from a wicked food poisoning thing from Firehouse subs. I quite literally thought that I would need to call an ambulance... lost an entire day of studying before my Organic chemistry final exam... I'm still hurting, but I can walk. I was thinking about trying to hit the gym and get those endorphins... I guess I'll sit it out and stick to my 3 times an month schedule for a few more days...

There is nothing that irritates me more than going into the gym and seeing there is a guy there sneezing and coughing. Then he puts his hands all over the handles and spreads germs that way. Sometimes I have left without working out. It is better to miss a workout than get sick.

i have the same, hate sick guys at the gym

I guess I am lucky, I don't get sick often. When I do its just a little stuffy and hoarse. I wash my hands often always have. I do not ever touch face or mouth with hands unless just washed. If I have to I use fore arm or back side of hand. My kids and wife get sick i sleep next to them and don't get it. Always have had a good immune system.
At gym we have sanitizer I clean before using behind people if they sick but usually for some reason I don't get it anyway. I have found that if I don't take antibiotics everytime a Dr wants to give them I have no troubles. I have a Dr that says let's wait call me in a week for some if it still hasn't got better. My kids and wifes dr gives them medicine for anything. I told her if yall needed it and it works why are yall always sick but not me? Because some Dr's are not good Dr's and are giving bacteria medicine for viruses that can only be waited out. I do take Claritin every night for allergies and Flonase. Before this is was getting sinus infections most of time.

My hands are dirty alot I am a mechanic I have had to disapline myself to not touch face with hands.

I'm trying to stick to my philosphy of forgoing training when sick, I went to Dr yesterday and have sinus infection, got some sleep last night finally and feel much better today, this is supposed to be squat day....but dont want to lower my resistance levels by balls to the wall squats so may just do some wussy leg extentions and leg curls.

Has anyone ever heard that if you have a cold or infection in yr throat that breathing in cold air (like today its zero here) for a short while will actually kill the germs in yr throat? Or that myth?

Not a myth but not exactly to kill germs. Bronchial tunes get relief from inflammation from breathing the cold air. My mom told me as a baby and toddler her and I had to stay out in cold weather several times a days as Dr orders.

Survivor, about sinus infection nasty stuff. I had them alot for years. Needed surgery, instead I started taking Flonase Dr told me I had to take it all the time for minimum of 8 months for sinuses to heal then continue taking it. He told me it isn't as needed for people with sinus problems. He was right 2-1/2 years no sinus infection not even stuffy with a cold. I also take Claritin every night. Two squirts Flonase at night each nostril and 1 Claritin.

Also survivor I posted about online parts replacement parts for Body Masters equipment. Let me know because I will continue to look for u
Also when I go back to my gym Monday or Tuesday whenever girl is working she knows merger Body Masters and Knight what the name and manufacturing stuff is called. I know after markets make all replacement parts though

Also Survivor, when I used to get sinus infections Amoxicillin was always and usually given first. Sometimes I would get it again. 6 weeks later and then given Z-Pack.
I also took Clindamycin on my own that we had at the house this knocked it out to not come back. Using a nasal wash or neti pot does wonders on cleans sinuses. The antibiotic cream Batroban (Mupirocin) helps to put on a Qtip and put into sinuses inside nostrils just a small amount inside nose. Do this with ointment for a few weeks daily. Staph and strept are some bad bacteria that some people with sinus problems get reoccurring. Using chlorohexidine anticepectic rinse kills it on our skin use 3-4 times a week for a month
Good for whole family sharing home to do. Or Clorox 1/4 to 1/2 cup into bathwater for a month almost everyday. This will kill the staph and strept that grows on skin.
Dr's wanna give medicine they need us to go back. They don't wanna completely cure us. After doing these things take probiotics and vit c 1000 mg a day with NAC 600 mg a day. Try not to take antibiotics at all unless absolutely needed they bring down our good bacteria responsible for 70% of our immune system!

Question, the Dr said to spray saline into nostrils as he said my sinuses are the driest hes seen for a while, then he said something like the sprayer becomes contanimated after usage, should I alcohol swab nozzle after each usage? He also recommended probiotics post anti-biotics

And I do now remember asking him abt being out in the cold and yr spot on, its good way to clear the passages but wont kill the growth per se

After each use clean nasal spray spray with soap and water and or alcohol swab.
Get the saline that will moisten your sinuses.
The air outside the northern cold with dry sinuses worse.
A humidifier will help in your room at night.
The Flonase is over the counter now. I get the generic brands for cvs their brand or Walmart. The Claritin I do same. Take these once a night every night following instructions.
Neti Pot can be purchased at Walmart or cvc or wherever. Use it and clean it as well. Good luck to u!
I have used the Flonase over 2 almost 3 years with Claritin with no side effects totally safe for all the time use. My wife does sisters and family. We in South louisiana sinuses cam get bad but unlike u we have moisture except with northern fronts

Thanks for the advice! I had a relapse, went to Dr last PM, more anti biotices and have ear infection. Im a mess. Gonna tough it out today and take tomm off. And no training :(

Listen to your body brother!
Yes! I think the january stress of trying to get new members, keeping my employees happy, just trying to stay open is responsible for 50% of the way I feel. I havent had entire day off in months, time for a day off. But thanks, thats great advice

Good discussion that has popped up on MuscleChemistry many times over the years. I think in the early phase of being sick, your body needs every ounce of strength and energy to fight the illness. Lifting on these days only drains your body further and hinders the fight. Then there comes a point where you can get moving and get your blood flowing and hopefully flush the remaining virus or whatever from your body. But, I agree with Survivor, in the first few days, it's important to rest and let your body do its thing.
