Estep’s new Youth world record snatch beat the previous record held by Nina Sterckx of Belgium by a single kilogram. Sterckx, age 17, scored an 88-kilogram (194-pound) snatch at the 2019 EPF European Youth Championships in Eliat, Israel. Estep also surpassed Jourdan Delacruz‘s former Junior American snatch record of 87 kilograms (191.8 pounds).
Estep’s 198-kilogram (436.5-pound) Youth total world record eclipsed Pak Jin-hae of the Republic of North Korea’s previous record also by a single kilogram. Pak, age 15, hit 197 kilograms (434.3 pounds) at the 2019 Asian Youth & Junior Championships in Pyongyang, North Korea. Pak still holds the Youth world record clean & jerk of 110 kilograms (242.5 pounds).

Youth World Championships Continue
At the time of this article’s publication, Russia, Thailand, and the USA have each has claimed two gold medals. Turkey and the Philippines have also scored gold in the Women’s 40-kilogram and Women’s 45-kilogram classes, respectively.
On Oct. 6, 2021, USA’s Hampton Morris, competing in the Men’s 55-kilogram class, set two Youth world records on the way to his gold-medal finish. Given the rate at which world records are being toppled in Jeddah, one can assume there will be more historic lifts made before the competition concludes on Oct. 12, 2021.
