2021 Olympia 212 Judging Report A New Champion?

By Ron Harris

Shaun Clarida, the reigning 212 Olympia champion looked incredible- but Derek Lunsford has taken his physique to another level. Issues from the past such as being flat and less than optimal stage color were no longer problems. Teaming up with coach Hany Rambod, who guided Phil Heath to 7 Mr. Olympia wins, was definitely the right move for Derek. That being said, Clarida is thick and gnarly shredded and a few pounds up from his 2020 win.

2019 winner Kamal Elgargni also looked sensational, with beautiful shape and symmetry along with shredded conditioning. He did appear a bit flat, and was clearly outsized by both Shaun and Derek. A big surprise was a bigger Ahmad Ashkanani from Kuwait, who finally managed to bring up his quads significantly. Initially I had him ahead of Kamal, but Ahmad came in too full and should have been sharper. Indiana rookie Nathan Epler, talk for this class at 5-8, was sliced and diced. A big disappointment was Keone Pearson, who should have been fighting for this title. Instead he looked 4 weeks out and was in the last callout.
