Powerlifter Russel Orhii will squat world record weight anywhere. The 83-kilogram IPF world record holder had a training session in a commercial gym and decided to load 725 pounds (or 329 kilograms) on a barbell. He packed his shoulders under the barbell in the squat rack with knee sleeves, wrist wraps, lifting belt, and his signature headband on and took the weight deep. Orhii successfully locked out the rep, meaning he surpassed his IPF world record raw squat of 320.5 kilograms (706.6 pounds) by 8.5 kilograms (18.7 pounds).

Check out Orhii’s impressive squat in the video below, courtesy of his Instagram page. As he walks back to rack the barbell after the squat, the right barbell collar falls off. The endplate also slides off just after Orhii safely returned that side of the barbell to the J-hook — averting a near potential disaster.

Note: Orhii’s squat does not count as an official world record as it wasn’t completed in competition. It should also be noted that Orhii lifted using un-calibrated plates (in pounds)

Unfortunately, Orhii did not disclose his body weight at the time of the lift. However, it is barely shy of four times his competition bodyweight.

Loading that much weight on the barbell required so many weight plates — 14 45-pound plates and two 25-pound plates — that the barbell collars were hanging on for dear life. Other elite powerlifters took to Orhii’s comments to praise him for the wildly heavy squat and urge caution.

Deadlift world record holder in the 110-kilogram class Jamal Browner commented, “Sheesh, be careful bro…” 2019 Arnold SBD Pro American champion Marcus Adobo cheekily wrote, “Nah what that dude [on] your left doing though?”

Orhii’s IPF Squat World Record
Orhii claimed gold at the 2021 IPF World Classic Championships in Halstad, Sweden, held from Sept. 29 through Oct. 3, 2021. His performance was highlighted by two new IPF world records for the squat and total. Here are his stats from that event:

2021 IPF World Classic Championships — Russel Orhii | 83KG
  • Squat — 320.5 kilograms (706.7 pounds) — IPF World Record
  • Bench Press — 187.5 kilograms (413.4 pounds)
  • Deadlift — 333 kilograms (734.1 pounds)
  • Total — 841 kilograms (1,854.3 pounds) —IPF World Record
Orhii has proven that he can exceed his current IPF world record squat in competition. According to Open Powerlifting, his best squat in competition is 323 kilograms (712.1 pounds), scored at the 2021 USA Powerlifting (USAPL) Raw Nationals — the current American raw squat record. Considering that his training lifts are smashing that weight as well, it seems like it’s only a matter of time before Orhii resets the world record squat again.
