Shawn Rhoden Tribute:

January 2022 MD Cover

By Steve Blechman

On November 6, 2021, Shawn Rhoden left us too soon at the age of 46. The 2018 Mr. Olympia champion had reportedly began training in earnest for a possible comeback to the stage in 2022, which would have marked his first competitive appearance in four years.

With his “classic” very pleasing physique, tiny waist and flaring quads, Shawn Rhoden could have won at least one more Mr. Olympia had he been allowed to compete after his 2018 win. Shawn had the aesthetic look and lines that has come into favor in the bodybuilding industry in recent years.

Alas, Shawn’s comeback was unfortunately not meant to be, as his potential Mr. Olympia reign was cut short due to a legal matter that he never had the chance to resolve and clear his name, partially due to the Covid pandemic paralyzing U.S. courts.

Shawn’s tragic passing was not only a tremendous loss to his family and to the bodybuilding community and all his fans, but on a personal note, it also hit me hard. I was also very saddened to hear about Shawn’s passing, because I have only positive memories of him as a total gentleman and champion. After Shawn’s legal problem began, I would often reach out to him to see how he was doing. Shawn was always very respectful, telling me: “Thank you, Mr. Blechman, sir. I appreciate it.”

Though we were collectively robbed of seeing this great champion defend his Mr. Olympia title, we are still fortunate to have born witness to one of the most perfectly sculpted physiques to ever grace a bodybuilding stage. And it is our honor and MD’s tribute to put Shawn Rhoden on our January 2022 cover.

Shawn Rhoden will always be remembered but never forgotten
