Why You Need Carbs for Breakfast

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: I would like to have Dr. T’s opinion on carbs for breakfast. I see many fitness gurus (not bodybuilding coaches) suggesting meat and nuts for breakfast without any carbs.

A: As a bodybuilder I’m aware that carbs are our fuel and the way to lift. Waking up from an eight-hour fasting means we are deprived of muscle glycogen. Therefore, the need for energy refuel is vital, both for the brain and muscles too. However, this will depend on you goals and either you want to bulk and lift seriously or you prefer to lean out and kill the fat. In the first case insulin is our friend, while in the second case we need to keep insulin down and GH high to burn some fat. I’m against the lack of carbs in the morning, since it’s perfect timing to fuel up your gas and be energetic until afternoon. Keep in mind that you have the chance of burning them for the rest of the day, unlike if you consume carbs with your dinner. Carbs should not be our villain, but our friend, and when they are being used wisely, you can achieve your goals easier in terms of performance.
