Sergio Fernandez - a Tribute

Caballo A La Carrera ... The Running Horse

This tribute is a collaboration of three people who knew Sergio Fernandez very well, particularly in his last days: Melissa Lara Morales, Alvaro Peña and Kit Sanderson.

We all knew the Spaniard for his slogan “Caballo A La Carrera,” and like his Gallego ancestry, the world was an open terrain where he roamed freely; not only as a top amatuer NPC bodybuilder, but as a coach and instructor, master of ceremony and workshop presenter. Literally influencing hundreds of thousands of fitness enthusiasts around the world ranging from Europe to the markets of the Americas; Sergio had held his own in NPC-level first callouts with other well-known newer IFBB pros such as Rafael Brandão, Cesar Quispe, Jossue Plascencia, Camilo Diaz, etc.

Off-stage, Sergio was a key contributing editor and commentator for Muscular Development Latino magazine and website. He was known to be very outspoken at his seminars, always seeking the truth as a motivational speaker and trainer. And of course a great instructor, helping build the physiques of top-notch athletes such as Larissa Reis, Yarishna Ayala, Alvaro Peña, etc.

Sergio Fernandez was a remarkable human being, defined by a single word, love; to his pupils and followers who shared the passion for sport of bodybuilding, but most of all his family. Father of a 4-month baby boy (David), and husband to Alessa de Leon, there are no words that can express our sadness of his departure.

Sergio Fernandez will always be in our hearts and memories riding like a stallion; we will continue to share his knowledge and memories for the rest of our lives. We are grateful to have shared with him and his strong gallop will not be forgotten.

Sergio was assaulted and murdered on January 24th in Mexico City after leaving a gym in his pickup truck. Further details are being investigated, but it was a robbery attempt. He was only 41 years old and was finishing up a tour of promotional events in order to create a budget to relocate his family to Spain.

We try to show our compassion and love for our dear colleague and his family. We are very sorry for his death and we try to provide financial support for his family; we know that this situation weighs heavily and as good human beings and friends of Sergio, we invite you to make your donation to help with funeral expenses and other details. Blessings to all.
