The team getting the points is the team that's supposed to lose according to the experts. The number is like a handicap, meaning that they are getting those points because that's how many they're "supposed" to lose by. So basically if a team is -6 it means theoretically that the beginning score is 6-0 the other team. So the -6 means that team has to win by more than 6 points to cover the spread and "win" the bet
