Default Introducing myself and starting a training log here

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. This board has always been an nice resource. I'm good friends with 105kStrongman and started visiting here back when he was here more. I've always just been a lurker haha... reading posts and not posting. Hopefully I'll also be able to contribute something useful here now and then.

I'm 31, 6'2" with a short torso, gorilla arms and stilts for legs, and right now about 190 lbs and pretty lean in the low single digits body fat trying to do a 181 lb class meet in about 2 months; and then my longer term goal is to get into the 220 lb class next year which should be much better for my leverages. I tore a muscle in my lower back a month and a half ago, so i'm coming back from that but feel almost fully recovered, although the lump is still unsightly.

I love competing, definitely amateur (it's always been more a competition with myself that other competitors), but I take it serious. I compete in powerlifting in the 181 to 198 lb class (should total around 1300 at 181 lbs raw coming up, which was my last total at 198 lbs), and right now just novice strongman. I have a few friends that are professional strongmen, and train with them often, so I may do some more of that as my strength increases further.

My goals relate almost solely to walking the line between staying healthy and injury free and being as strong as possible. Always a skinny guy (6-2 and 140 lb when I was 20 years old!) and with a short torso and arms and legs so long that you can't help but think of inspector gadget when you see them, I've battled through a lot to bring my lifts and muscle mass up over the years to where they are now. I'm fascinated by the human body and how much it's able to adapt, and that's where a good bit of my love for these sports comes from.

I also love research and DIY. Suppliments .. diets .. programs .. everything ... I prefer to learn everything I can about something and completely educate myself on a topic, and then do it myself or make it myself.

I'll try to keep a general log here, although I'm not online as much as I used to be, so it'll be more of a highlights real of my training etc.. hopefully it's useful to someone and I get some good input on my training and lifting-related stuff.

Thanks everyone!
-Jonny

Here's some brief details on my training:

I train full body with heavy singles and triples 4 to 10 times a week (I like 2-a-days here and there, they work well for me). It's worked incredibly since I started training like this a few years ago, coming from a modified body part split. It's not as much volume as it seems. The actual total reps are low but the frequency is high and the work is always in the top range above 85% 1RM, except for assistance and prehab/rehab work as needed. Off days I usually do body weight movements for recovery. Hypertrophy is actually pretty good; enough where I have to be careful how i eat to stay in my weight class, despite being a very hard gainer. I've never been injured badly except for this recent tear (I was dehydrated some which I think contributed), and recurring tendinitis when I neglect my prehab.

My typical workout consists of 3 main excersizes. The first a squating or "hinging" movement (Zerchers, stones, front squats, back squats, deadlifts, good mornings etc... or a combination like jump squats with bands followed by partial squats) Then I'll ether go to a pressing movement (OH presses, bench, curl to press, logs etc..) and then a pulling movement (Pull ups, some variation of a row, etc.. ) or I'll alternate pulling and pressing movements with some assistance/prehab work thrown in here and there. Almost all main excersizes are heavy singles double and triples, but sometimes I'll do higher reps as explosively as possible ... usually in groups of 3 reps with short rests, or with pull ups just throughout the workout almost as a tonic to stretch my body out after all the compression.

First of all after 11 years of battling to get stronger, I have clear empirical evidence that this program works for me for an extended period of time ... but more importantly, it's just plain fun to train like this. I just like moving heavy things. The down side is eventually you'll probably get hurt (the severity of which depends on too many things to list, some controllable, some outside of our control), but by training smart I hope to eliminate any real injury.

My diet switches around a lot but almost always is some kind of carb cycling program. I use different pieces of different diet philosophies depending where my body's at and where I want it to be, and is specific to my naturally low body fat hard gainer body type.

I know I've rambled on but that's my story to date.

Thanks
Jonny

Very interesting training program. I've always found powerlifting type training programs extremely interesting. I'll be following. What are your stats and bests? Do you compete?

Thanks, hopefully I can add something useful to this board.

My last PL meet was a meet in November 2011. Squat 465, bench 290 and DL 565 in the 198 lb weight class. There was a screw up with the weigh in (they had a day before weigh in on the application but it was a misprint, and I didn't find out until I went to weigh in Friday night, so I ended up not being fully rehydrated and loaded when I weighed in and started lifting a few hours later that Saturday. Still an armature so working out the kinks.

I've had alot of problems with my bench, with tendonitis and general shoulder problems, so every meet prep I end up hurting my shoulder, hence the lower bench. My bench was always weak besides that with super long arms and a short torso. i think I have it worked out now tho. Reverse-gripping solves all my problems; I can bench a good +15% more and my shoulder never gets hurt benching reverse grip. If you see my avatar with a toothless smile you know my plan backfired haha.

I have good mechanical leverages for deadlifting (I've even got some sick scoliosis going on like Lamar Grant haha) and squating has been going pretty good. Plus I have a great team to prep for meets with some record holding PL's (a geared 1000lb squater in the group) and pro strongmen. I only compete raw but having guys like that around helps alot (and girl ... she just set some records geared).

The training schedule I spoke about is my day to day training. The last 4-6 weeks before a meet I switch to more or less a westside template with just 1 ME day per week and 1 speed day each for squatting/DL and pressing, so 4 workouts, with assistance stuff after the main lifts.

I'm no professional but I've overcome a lot of negatives to get where I'm at and am pretty pleased with the direction I'm going. Considering my height, leverages and lower BW, I'm not exactly cut out for these sports but I love them too much to accept that.

Gym PRs are a little better, but as far as recent PR's at my current weight in the mid 180's I did some Zercher Squats from low pins at 455, back squat (maybe a hair high for a meet) at 455 lbs, and some front Squats at 365 lbs. I'll put some links to videos on youtube of my recent lifts.
This is at a lower bodyweight than before and I'm coming back from a muscle tear in my back about 1.5 months ago. I haven't tried DL'ing yet since the injury.

Here's my twisted back:

I know the poundages aren't that spectacular, but you don't see many 6'2" guys competing under 220 lbs for a reason haha

Default 2/21's workout

Thanks bigghorn. I'd love to be able to return the favor.

Yesterday's workout was crap, mostly because I screwed up on diet yesterday and the off day before. I carb cycle as I feel I need it for a lot of reasons. Right now I'm lean enough where I just do an occasional short keto run and then carb backload like crazy with ala or something to keep insulin high/mimicked, both through the keto run to accelerate getting into ketosis and then after to refuel as quick and as much as possible. It's less about fat loss for me and more about keeping my insulin sensitivity high. I used to check my fasted blood glucose every morning with a BG meter to see when it was getting higher from a high carb diet; now I just occasionally check, but have a good feel for how I react to things. This helps me all the way around with both muscle gain and fat loss.

I've been eating a bunch of carbs for the past week so after Monday's workout and some carbs after, I cut them out until yesterday night at the gym. I screwed up because this last time I didn't get nearly enough calories/fat and was too busy to do more than spoon down some coconut oil and a protein shake for half my meals. By the time I got to the gym last night I was ready to pass out, even with a lot of stimulants before the gym.

I'll tell you though, a hand full of dry cereal, a disgusting carb/amino shake and some glucose tabs never tasted so good when I got to the gym ... I hate being hungry ... it's a rare day life interferes enough to stop me from eating good.

Here's the highlight real ... back squated and worked up to a double with 455 that ended up being an inch or 2 high, interspersed with maybe 70 pull ups total, a few light sets of reverse grip bench here and there to get the blood flowing (tri's where feeling used up), some band pull aparts and some fat grip curls. I kept doing sets of other misc stuff between heavy squat singles and doubles because I needed the extra time the way I was feeling between squat sets and figured I wasn't going to make it through a full workout and make it worth a damn. I got home and iced my lower back for an hour. 45 minutes with ice when I need it is the minimum that makes a difference for me, but it makes a big difference for me when I'm fighting inflammation. Feeling much better this morning; looking forward to eating non stop today.

I forgot to mention the real depressing part... at the beginning of the workout yesterday I felt, despite starving, really strong. 405 lbs felt like 135 ... then I think the pre-workout/stimulants wore off when I did 455 .. this was over an hour into my workout (usually I'm only there an hour total) between throwing in other sets and going to a gym I hadn't been to in a while where everyone was talking to me I wasted too much time, but because I had it in my head I could do it no problem, I loaded 475, which would have been a nice PR for me at 183 lbs (yesterday's morning carb depleted weight), unracked it, walked it out, reracked it and went home lol.

What I wouldn't have given for an ammonia cap right then. For any of you that are training for strength and haven't ever tried an ammonia cap or smelling salts when going for a PR you might want to try them. I absolutely love them once in a while for a PR or for my 2nd/3rd attempt at a meet ... in lieu of a training partner to kick you in the face to get you going before the lift haha.

Thanks bro. It's a great rush, I'm sure similar to bodybuilding stepping on stage, and the whole process of getting ready for a meet is an experience. With my totals right now I'm not making any records or into the top 100 anytiem soon, but with how much faster I've been progressing over the past year it's something to shoot for. Plus it's a spectacle when a 6'2" guy steps onto the platform to lift in the under 200 lb classes haha; feels good to give people some suprises once in a while.

I'm still feeling a little run down today, even though I've been eating non stop and am weighing over 190 lbs tonight with some bloat going on. 5 of those pounds came after the gym today from the 6 hour long meal I just finished and my homemade intraworkout "swell" drink. I didn't do much today beyond some recovery and prehab work, general lighter weight stuff like DB curl to press, band pull aparts, and some bodyweight dips and pullups ... and these 1 armed barbell snatches. I'm really annoyed that I couldn't even do 135 lbs on this .. mostly I'm annoyed because now I have to keep doing them until I get the hang of it again OCD style.

This is from today bored and feeling beat up still, making a spectacle of myself at the gym with 1 armed barbell snatches ...

and here's some useless video of me squatting from yesterday ...

Both of these videos pretty useless, but I'm having fun recording these workouts and editing them so for now at least I'll keep doing it for motivation and record keeping.

big n wv, what kind of training program do you have the most success with for meet preps? Do you compete raw or geared?

Carb'ed up these past few days and weighed in at 190 this morning on empty. 7 lbs in a few days. I know a good portion of it is water and carbs, but I feel a lot better, and my morning weight is usually pretty accurate. I hit 198 lbs when I weighed myself last night after the gym, dinner and with that "swell" drink loaded with carbs and "cell swelling" aminos during my workout, from 183 lbs in the evening at the gym just a few days before. I can go into more detail if people are interested in this, but suffice to say for now I can put on 5 to 10 pounds of water and glycogen stores in a few hours with that. I'm going to experiment with adding glycerin at some point to see how it effects getting some major bloat on when I need it in the gym and also to practice rehydrating and refilling glycogen after making weight for a meet. I have a bottle of glycerin but haven't had time to read up enough to come up with a plan of self experimenting for different applications.

It was another "nothing to write home about" workout last night but I really pushed it after slowing down for a month this past week, so I'm sure it'll pay off after a couple days rest this weekend. I front squatted and did weighted dips and pullups to stretch everything out and finished with some ab work. My spine's feeling a little compressed and beat up, and even though it loads the spine, front squats feel theraputic for my back. It's just a personal feeling; I'd like to hear what anyone else thinks of that. I iced everything on my hour ride home from the gym. I worked out near where I work so I'd have a long drive to ice my back and hips (I bring extra ice packs in my cooler) ... sometimes I need to trick myself into doing the boring but necessary stuff... And I feel great this morning.

Of course I had to make a video, even though the workout wasn't anything noteworthy, because this movie editing software is just too much fun not to use. The idiot who recorded the ab work was obviously unqualified to operate a complicated cell phone camera, and has it zoomed in on me and hits stop mid way through the set, but I still think they look cool with only my shoulders touching the bench ... i know i'm vain haha.

Welcome to MuscleChemistry Jonny! ANy friend of 105strongman is a friend of mine!!!!

I use to compete in powerlifting before i got into bodybuilding, and it realy took a serious toll on my joints, so thats when i decided to try bodybuilding, lol!

You are one of the most shredded powerlifters I have ever seen! you dont see many guys with such low BF competing in powerlifting.

So once again welcome to MuscleChemistry!

ANd How is Wes doing?

Thanks man. I'm definitely amateur, but I like it alot ... no genetics for it but every step forward is all the more rewarding. The ripped part is half genetics and half being single

Wes is good! Working a lot and not much free time, but good. The PR's he's hitting lately are incredible ... you know there's no exaggeration in these numbers ... in the past couple weeks at 198 lbs body weight he's hit 350x10 bench press with a messed up elbow, 700x3 squats, DB bench with over his bodyweight in each hand 200 lb DB's just barely didn't lock out his bad elbow ... just incredible stuff. If I ever make it even close to his strength I'd have hit my lofty goals. If you click on my videos through one of those youtube videos I posted above you can see some pretty good videos of him .. The one of us at work is funny but the hammer guarantee one is the best by far lol

Damn man, you are fucking lean! It's crazy how you find powerlifters with bodybuilder physiques and more than a few "bodybuilders" that never end up looking like anything more than a huge powerlifter

Thanks man. For me it's diet and realizing I just work better lean, although lately it's more than usual. I got up to 210 last year, went down to 198 for that last meet, and then dropped a few pounds being lazy after the meet. When I started training hard again I was hitting the same numbers 30 lbs lighter so I'm working up again from there. Part of it, beyond just skinny guy genetics, is I just don't do well with carbs, so i cycle them to get the calories I need but still feel good, and just a couple days low carbs melts every once of fat off me. And I like the whole shredded PL thing... look at Ed Coan and Kirk Karwoski... or in strongman Derek or Marius ... most of the best ever outside of the superheavyweights where pretty lean

I took Friday and yesterday off, but Friday I had the brilliant idea to try taking an ice bath for my sore back, knees, everything, etc... it didn't work out so well. My girl's in Florida and had to see it, so I recorded it ... any chance to watch myself on video haha

Thanks for the support bro! I've had I think 3 days off the gym now and lower than usual volume the entire week so tomorrow I'm well rested and going for 5 wheels on a full depth squat which is my white whale and a big PR for me that I've been chasing a while ... thanks for the motivating post! Hopefully I'll have a PR video tomorrow now that I've announced my goal and can't bitch out!

I ended up having to help a friend with something yesterday and getting to the local fitness gym I go to on weekends a half hour before it closed ... barely had time to hit a single every 90 lbs warming up. Ended up trying 495 with the last employee there standing over my shoulder complaining he wanted to leave. It was a mess .. my form was way off, my walk out killed me, and it was a fail ... but I'm thinking in a week or so I'll have it.... I think the video looks worse than it is ... if I had sat back farther it would've made a big difference, and i'll probably try it from a monolith next attempt. I'm about 2" high at the bottom here but thats fine, I always try to jump 50 lbs and hit the weight a little high and then practice it until I hit depth when making new PR's. I don't know if it's most effective but i like chasing PR's too much to wait until I'm ready to drop all the way down to try a new weight. Here's my more embarrassing than usual video...

Default Squat PR!! Finally 495 lbs

So I took yesterday off, more due to too many other responsibilities than wanting a rest day, and when I got to the gym I figured I'd give that 495 lb squat PR another try. Ended up doing it, and pretty easily, but very sloppy and a bit high. I've been trying to save my svelte narrow hips by squatting a little more narrow lol but screw that my leverages work much better with a wider stance. This was pretty much the extent of my workout, with maybe 50 or 60 pullups throughout my squat warm ups and sets to stretch my back and get a little upper body work in. I'm weighing about 192 right now.

Here's the video ... a few inches high, a little shaky, but at last my 495 lb squat:

Deadlifted for the first time since tearing that back muscle. I was actually scared. Normally my mindset is I'll pull till I hear a disc hitting the wall ... not literally but I'll pull through alot... I hope I get past this new slight thread of intimidation. I worked up to a double at 495 and then moved onto some assistance work and then did supersets of OH press with bent over explosive BB rows ... worked up to a 205 lb OH press (with a little push) and for a row a double with 315. I really need to bring up my OH press. Phone died I only caught the pulls, but you can see even though I'm pulling carefully they're pretty light, so hopefully I'll be hitting some decent PR's for DL soon...

Incidentally I always round my upper back like that when pulling ... more than that sometimes... It helps me pull bigger but looks like crap.

It's funny I still remember the tips I read here when I first tried to deadlift and was just a "lurker" on this site that Get_Swole posted The Dirty Dozen: 12 Tips for Heavier Pulls

Thanks Get_Swole! I could only pull 315 and that was what just a few years ago when I was just starting heavier training. Especially the shoulder blades back and down tip seems to help me start the pull in the right groove and keep the weight close to me without thinking about it.

lower back strength is slowly coming back ... had 3 heavy workouts in the 5 days since my last post consisting of mostly heavy triples of squats, weighted pull ups and rows and reverse and regular grip bench. Yesterday I pulled again, followed by narrow grip BP working up to 285x5 and DB rows 125x16 with some pullups throughout and jumped around with assistance work. The DL pulls went better than 5 days ago but still feel disproportionately weak in my lower back:

Decided to shake things up and go for some hopefully quicker advances in my strength. I'm planning on starting to work dynamic effort movements into every workout ... bands, chains, dynamic explosive movements, depth jumps etc .. at 55-80% of my 1RM ala Westside, but working it into my existing training programming before my heavy singles, doubles and triples at +85%. I used dynamic effort work in the past in a conventional Westside template to some success, so it's not a new concept for me, but it'll be a little different this time since I'm in love with high frequency training and the contrarian side of it, and you gotta love what you do in the gym. Hopefully the added lighter work will help my tendonitis issues as well.

While my strength is only marginal for PL'ing at my bodyweight, my strength progress has been excellent over the past few years, but I'm confident it can be better so I'm shaking things up some. I'm also curious what effect the added volume will do to my physique.

Today was an off-ish rest-ish day; I did some heavy shrugs and calf raises and a bunch of band pull aparts, unweighted pullups and dips, and machine pullovers with moderate weight and a great stretch.... Just getting the blood flowing and doing a little assistance work ... and maintaining my sanity

really? wow bro ur really missing out on taking your physique to the next level. I know for me that addition of tren ace is what made me decide to do my first show ever , this was many years ago, but long story short, tren changed my body so fast and so well , it was unbelievable!

Prop, tren ace, winny and IGF-1 is hands down the best thing I have ever done!

It is one of a kind, mostly in a good way. I think the sides can be controlled with dosing and nootropics if you get prolactin problems. And if you use the acetate ester you can quickly adjust the dosage.

Haven't updated workouts in a bit. Its been a busy week. I'm going ahead with working speed work, dynamic movements, polymetrics etc into my workouts. I've been using bands in my benching with as much weight as I can use and still keep the bar moving fast, using my intuition as a guide rather than calculating percentages. I also worked in jump squats working up to 365 + red bands single choked .... gets me some weird looks which is always a plus in my book haha. Still doing the 1-3 rep max effort work after the dynamic work on most days. My bench already feels like I got out of the slump I was in, although it's still below my previous best at around 200 to 210 lbs bodyweight last year.

Here's a couple recent Max Effort lifts at around 190 lbs bodyweight:

I started a blog outlining my diet and training methodologies, along with logging my training progress. I think some of my powerlifting related training stuff isn't directly in line with everyone's goals, but if you're curious, check it out:

The Harder I Work The Luckier I Get

If you have any constructive criticism I'd love to hear it. I'm just finishing my ISSA PT certification and starting a local bootcamp-ish/personal training thing in the near future in my area and using the blog to back up my experience, so that's the real purpose behind the blog, along with having a place to direct friends and acquaintances to that ask me questions instead of repeating the same stuff all the time. Plus I like to share the things I've learned. I'll still keep this log going .. I really like the community here and it kinda feels homey here plus I can talk about things here that wouldn't be appropriate on the blog.

Wife and I both have our ISSA cert. Around here it's one of the few acceptable training certa but we never did anything with it we just got certified to do something together I guess lol but it's a decent Cert bro!

And glad u lime it here and yeah it does have a family feel to the community and I'm glad that shows through to others!
