NPC Judging Confusion
Having been around this crazy sport for a few years, I have never been able to get a straight answer from anyone, including the judges about the rule and how they apply from division to division. Especially when discussion the crossovers from one division to another.

Now for years, I was told behind the scenes that the bikini division was all based on ass and boobs. That seems to have changes slightly over the last few years,as the women have gotten more and more ripped and abs and hammie tie ends I n the buttocks are one of the mainstays of the class. If you go to the NPC Official Webpage this is all it says about the scoring for bikini.

Scoring

Judges will be scoring competitors using the following criteria:

  • Balance and Shape
  • Overall physical appearance including complexion, skintone, poise and overall presentation.
If we look at the physique and figure divisions it is easy to see that muscularity and conditioning are the main elements.
The figure division has the following guidelines for scoring per the NPC Official Webpage

Scoring – Judges will be scoring competitors using the following criteria:

Small degree of muscularity with separation, no visible striations

  • Overall muscle tone with shapely lines, overall firmnessand not excessively lean
  • Full general assessment
  • Healthy appearance
  • Make-up
  • Skin tone
Fitness is entirely different as they actually have their routines that play a huge part in how the individual women are scored. The Fitness division actually has more criteria for judging than any other class. The fitness division has the following guidelines for scoring per the NPC Official Webpage

Scoring – Round 1:
Judges will score the degree of athleticism using the following criteria:

  • Firmness
  • Symmetry
  • Proportion
  • Overall physical appearance including –
1. Complexion
2. Poise
3. Overall Presentation

Fitness – Round 2:
Each athlete will perform a maximumtwo minute routine.
Scoring – Round 2:
Judges will use four (4) aspects toscore this round using the following criteria:
1. Strength – the amount and types of strength moves. The degree ofdifficulty of these moves. The ease and correctness of the moves.
2. Flexibility – the number and types of flexibilitymoves. The degree of difficulty of these moves. The ease and correctness of the moves.
3. Cardiovascular –the tempo of the routine.
4. Overall Package – Full general assessment includingbut not limited to creativity, stage presence, outfits, hair and make-up

There you have it, all of the scoring information for all of the divisions under the NPC rules. Of course there are classes within each of the divisions for weight and height and there are even classes for age ranges as well. Now we have picked the women’s divisions to look at, but the men’s divisions and classes are about the same.

So now I ask you the following question to ponder? If you were to place or even win in one of the division, how, if you follow the rules that are outlined above, how do you do well in another division? How does a woman that has won in bikini crossover into figure and then do well, place in that division? Now if a person is placed lower in figure, out of the top 10 but decides to crossover to physique and then places in the top of the division that would be understandable. She was penalized for having too much muscle in figure, but rewarded in the physique division.

I know that this may sound strange, but how many of you have been to contest where the same people, regardless of the division seem to always be in the top. I just don’t buy that at all. If you stick by the rules, this would not happen.

So why does this happen? I have my own ideas, but I will keep them to myself for now.

Well I can speak from my experience of being a judge. First off the biggest flaw to judges is they are human. Second is most judges on the local level have no idea what to truly look for in the overall look. They may see one great body part and/or size or condition and place someone just based on that factor alone and not the complete package. Also most local level judges haven't never been to a national level or pro show, so they have never seen with their own eyes what a top level complete package is. Then when it came down to critique time at the end of shows, some judges would leave so they wouldn't have to do it or sit there and give bullshit answers to questions. Best advice I can give is "never ask a judge for advice." Just be honest with yourself and compare yourself with the winners and see what is missing.

oh and yes there is politics involved, I have seen that bullshit happen with my own eyes. From their trainers being judges, money exchange, and "sponsorship"
