    Default .22 FILTERS

    IM DONE WITH THEM..

what a pain in the ass...

im switching to .45...whats your thoughts on that??
im just sick of them blocking so quick and also using so much pressure the sryinge rubber ends up failing and oil coming out the wrong end..
i had 2 sryinges fail due to the rubber today..which was a pain as i had about 15ml left and had to order more sryinges..so thought sod it im going to go back to .45 like i did back in the tren pellet days

maybe i should use 10ml sryinges not the 20ml ive been using....

For personal use, you can definitely use a .45 filter and get a media bottle and use a bottle top filter with a hand vacuum pump.

.22 is like watching the grass grow.

I have had good luck using Whatman .45's using a 3 ml syringe to filter with. It was so much easier than using a 10 ml syringe. I just ordered some Whatman .20's, and see how they work using my set up.

.22 are great for micro bacterial removal. I double filter, first with a .45 then a .22 and I have never had any sterility issues even not heating the solution.

I think for sterility reasons stick with the .22 but the pressure your adding to it is bursting the rubber.

If you don't mind the extra step - just the fact that you prefilter with a 0.45 will dramatically improve the lifetime of the 0.22 filter.

For comparison - I like using bottle-top filters (0.22 micron). Without any prefiltering, I can get *maybe* 100 or so mL through on my standard unit. Even just passing it through a paper *coffee* filter, for comparison, allows nearly 3 times that amount to pass - and a coffee filter is nothing fancy. Any time you prefilter, you take out the larger particles that will block up your fine filter that much faster.

For sterility, 0.22 is always preferred to a 0.45.

ok i will have a go with a 45 pre and then .2 just to see..because at the moment im getting like 30ml before it starts to clog..
trust me im all for a .2.
but the fact they are clogging way to easy and just seem to take an age..
im going to have a look at some bottle top units next time i think as this 50gram has become a chore..

want sort of temp do you guys run your oil though i find at around 80-90c it runs nice and fast...would this have any adverse effects on the filter or even gear?...im sure the filter can take that sort of heat right?

Yes. Heating the oil makes it soooo much easier to filter. But not so hot as to melt the filter. About 100 f works well for me.

I would agree 100 F is usually good - the problem is the membranes are very thin - so temperatures that would be supported by a bulk form of the plastic can soften the membrane to the failure point.

It does say up to 150c. That is pretty hot. Boiling point is 100c. But would never take it that high.

so what sort of bottle top filters you guys use. Could you post a few links. I think I need to step up my game.

i was looking at the single use ones. But not sure you can change the filter. Any how to many questions spring to mind and I don't want to bog you down. I will do some research first then hit you guys up when I come unstuck

I heat mine to 125 but let cool down to 110 or less before filtering. I was trained via the Internet by a pro..... (lol)

Any hook up or recommendations for Bollte top filters. eBay has them. But well it's eBay right.

There are actually several suppliers out there for bottle top or even assembled filtration units. The assembled units are more expensive, but are sterilized, single use, so the risk of "bad cleaning" is avoided. Millipore, Pall, Celltech all carry lines of bottle top and filter units. In some cases, you can purchase directly, in others through distributors.

One *other* possibility (which I've never seen mentioned on the board), for intermediate volumes, is the Millipore Sterivex line. These are syringe-style filters, but instead of a membrane disk, they are a miniature version of a pleated membrane cartridge filter. I have used them a few times - when I worked somewhere where I could get them as samples With prefiltering, I'm betting your could get a nice throughput on the 0.22 micron units - even *without* prefiltering, they were much higher capacity than the classic disk filters.

Are you still final filtering with a 0.22 micron? The 0.45 is fast - because *very* small particles don't block it up...but those very small particles include bacteria.

Trust me when I say if you do a 0.45 micron prefilter, your 0.22 will run *much* better, unless you have *really* heavy sub-micron contamination.....

I will be honest. No I did not doc9. I'm thinking the BA will now keep it sterile @ 3%.

I do value all opinions and will be looking at bottle top .2. At a later date.

I just filtered 80 ml of EQ with a Whatman .20. I pre-filtered it with a .45 a few weeks ago. Easy peasy.
