Granite Supplements: A Legacy of Quality
By Team MD

Granite Supplements remains fully embraced by the bodybuilding community and has a loyal following worldwide – proving the theory of its founder, the late John Meadows: the best ingredients scientifically formulated will result in better outcomes for all stages of the fitness journey.

Granite Supplements is a staple for professional athletes across the globe, a company with a rich history and a strong legacy that is dedicated to the vision of its humble founder, the late John Meadows. John launched Granite Supplements in 2017, after attaining a cult following around his own supplement use and training practices as an IFBB Pro bodybuilder. John’s mission was to provide scientifically formulated supplements to support athletes in all phases of their fitness journey.

John Meadows’ philosophy was simple: “Granite Supplements was developed to bring athletes better formulas, ingredients and outcomes. People should know exactly what they’re taking, so we dedicate ourselves to producing quality products and delivering them with transparency.”

Best Ingredients for Better Outcomes

John Meadows was well respected in the industry as a bodybuilder, and for his training, nutrition and supplementation knowledge. His unique understanding of the human physique, nutrition, his own health experiences, and practical financial know-how led him to become an entrepreneur. Granite Supplements remains fully embraced by the bodybuilding community and has a loyal following worldwide – proving John’s theory: the best ingredients scientifically formulated will result in better outcomes for all stages of the fitness journey.

John Meadows: The Man and His Legacy

Ohio’s born-and-bred John Meadows carved out a unique place for himself in the bodybuilding industry. Even before he became a pro, this former vice president at J.P. Morgan, who came from humble beginnings and survived a life-threatening illness, became a social media phenomenon and in demand for world tours.

John’s life story was one of overcoming challenges and pursuing one’s potential. From humble beginnings, John became a man who was revered by many as a coach, father figure and inspiration. And John always made it clear that what he cherished the most was family, his wife Mary and his two sons: Alexander and Jonathan. John loved coaching football; he coached more than one team at a time at some points and was able to coach his sons as well.

John became involved in sports at a young age, and entered his first bodybuilding contest at age 13, and was hooked. He competed for the next 32 years, earning his IFBB Pro Card in 2015 at the age of 43. He survived a rare vascular disease that resulted in the removal of his entire colon in 2005.

“Back in 2006, doctors were telling me I should never lift anything heavier than 30 pounds,” John told MD in 2016. “But I was fortunate that my family doctor, and very good friend, was and is Dr. Eric Serrano, MD, who is into bodybuilding and an expert on sports nutrition. He was fully supportive about me getting back into competing. He said, “We just have to be smart with your training. We just need to figure out what exercises you can do and what you can’t do.”

After winning his pro card, John said, “It was very emotional – lots of people that have been with me through the years were there – and they were crying. After 16 years of trying for the card, it was an unbelievable feeling that will be really hard to beat.”

John also recalled his first contest in an MD interview: “In 1985, I entered my first bodybuilding contest at 13, and had no idea what I was doing. It was the Mr. Buckeye contest and there were four guys in the class, which was for 14- to 17-year-olds. At 119 pounds, I got fourth out of four. I don’t really have a lot of recollection on how I prepared for it, other than people told me not to drink water for the last day or two. I remember just having a couple of ice cubes now and then. That was pretty much all the liquid I got.

“The top two guys who impressed me at the time were Lee Haney and Tom Platz. I went to a Platz seminar when I started competing, and I couldn’t believe how intelligent he was. He was talking about stuff like mitochondria, slow- and fast-twitch fibers and he was using all of these words that I was reading about in the magazines. I was like, “Man, this guy is really smart.” He was passionate and worked hard. So I really tried to emulate him. Everything I could read of his, I tried.”

Mountain Dog Goes Global

Throughout his bodybuilding career, John shared techniques, answered questions, provided nutritional advice, and sprinkled in life lessons. He earned a BA in Health and Fitness Management from Capital University, and accreditations as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Sports Nutritionist from the International Society of Sports Nutrition (CISSN). John’s mountaindog1 YouTube channel features hundreds of training and nutrition videos and has amassed a global following of over 565K subscribers. He also developed the “Meadows Row,” a specific training exercise for growing back muscles that is now an industry staple.

John genuinely wanted the best for people and shared his knowledge freely. He loved coaching fitness athletes, bodybuilders in particular and had clients that won Olympia titles or placed highly at the Olympia. Granite Supplements recently signed Terrence Ruffin, ranked second in the world in Classic Physique, behind Chris Bumstead. John was a mentor and coach to Terrence Ruffin, which is one of the main reasons Terrence partnered with Granite. He wants the legacy of John to live on.

Iconic Figure and Inspiration

Overcoming hardship, leading with excellence, and running his businesses with integrity, John Meadows remains an iconic figure and inspiration to many. And he was a strong proponent for a culture of science-backed training and nutrition in the fitness industry. Prior to his sudden death, John had many projects in development and a larger vision for the company he founded. Granite Supplements is dedicated to his vision, and their mission is written in stone, signifying their unyielding commitment to their products and the athletes who use them.

When it came to nutrition, John prioritized quality essential ingredients at effective doses. This combination is hard to find in the supplement industry, where products are rarely transparent, are under-dosed, and under-deliver on results. This inspired him to create no-compromise formulas for athletes who refuse to settle for anything less than the best. Granite continues to develop products with the same high standards and transparency that are the hallmarks of the Granite Supplements brand.
