Do SARMs increase Blood Pressure?

When I was about 5 – 6 years old, I apparently bit open my dad’s high blood pressure pill container and drank an undisclosed amount of pills.

That means I cannot ever have high blood pressure, right?

Unfortunately, that’s not how any of this works, no matter how many doctors I consult.

Traditional Anabolic Steroids are notorious for increasing blood pressure, but since SARMs were developed to have fewer side effects, they surely have less of an effect on the cardiac system.

Hypertension should be something you are worried about, and since BP (blood pressure) is something we brush off, you can expect to feel some sides.

Will you feel them from SARMs too?

Key Takeaways

  • Blood pressure is the measurement of blood against the artery’s walls

  • SARMs can increase blood pressure, especially the HGH-based and stronger ones

  • Combating blood pressure on cycle is possible with certain lifestyle changes and supplements

  • Data would suggest that more than 30% of the planet already suffers from high blood pressure

What is Blood Pressure?

Before we dig into the analytics and science behind SARMs and their effect on the human body, we first need to understand what blood pressure actually is. According to the CDC, the description is as follows [1]:

“Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Arteries carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body”

As the name suggests, blood pressure refers to the pressure your blood has. Usually, blood pressure is measured with two numbers.

[*]The systolic blood pressure measures the pressure of the blood when your heartbeats

[*]The diastolic blood pressure measures the pressure of the blood between heartbeats

This is why you often hear the numbers referred to as “something over something”, as the systolic is mentioned first, and the diastolic is second.

Figure 1: Blood pressure is quite literally just a measurement of how much pressure your blood feels in your veins

The range for healthy blood pressure will depend wildly based on who the person is. For the general public, the ideal number would be 120/80 mmHg. That said, it is quite common for athletes to have higher blood pressure [2]. This is due to them just producing a boatload of oxygen, thus, their blood becomes “thicker”. The full range is as follows:

Normal: Less than 120 over 80 (120/80)

Elevated: 120-129/less than 80

Stage 1 high blood pressure: 130-139/80-89

Stage 2 high blood pressure: 140 and above/90 and above

Hypertension crisis: higher than 180/higher than 120

What increases Blood Pressure?

Now that we know what blood pressure is, we have to talk about the fact that hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a large issue. Not just in those looking to use performance-enhancing drugs, but the general public as well.

Figure 2: There are various things that increase blood pressure, all of which are bad for the kidneys and heart

It is estimated that more than 30% of the world’s population suffers from high blood pressure [3]. So, what increases blood pressure so dramatically?

  • Research shows that diets rich in sodium seem to increase blood pressure [4]

  • Logically, there is a direct link between inflammation and blood pressure [5]

  • Smoking is known to increase blood pressure, as well as other compounds of similar nature [6]

  • Other factors that increase blood pressure include weight, age, genetics, and drug use

We are, of course, discussing SARMs and their impact on blood pressure. First off, it is known that Testosterone injections do increase blood pressure slightly, especially when using more than what is known as TRT.

Other Androgens have similar effects, and a big reason for this is they cause an increase in blood production (hematopoiesis). This is why patients who suffer from high blood pressure are told to exercise more, to try and “thin” the blood.

How to lower Blood Pressure?

Taking SARMs might increase blood pressure, but more on this later. First, let’s look at some legit ways to decrease blood pressure quickly and effectively [3, 4, 5]:

  • Exercise, especially cardiovascular exercise is known to help

  • Managing hormones in the body such as Testosterone and Estrogen

  • Reducing the amount of fat on the body

  • Having a healthy amount of lean muscle mass

  • If your symptoms continue, you might want to control them using prescription medication

Do SARMs increase Blood Pressure?

Now, finally, we can look at SARMs and their effects on blood pressure. First off, there are a tremendous number of SARMs. The very first one we can address is MK-677, which will without doubt increase blood pressure. This is a common phenomenon with all compounds that increase Growth Hormone in the body.

A common side effect of most SARMs is changing cholesterol. We see that most SARMs will cause an increase in LDL (bad) cholesterol, and a decrease in good cholesterol, HDL. Studies have shown that there is a link between cholesterol and blood pressure and the former impacts the latter [7]. So, best check your blood lipids.

Figure 3: Lipids that are too high can lead to plaque build up, leading to high blood pressure

Another thing to consider is Estrogen conversion. We know that certain SARM cycles will cause an increase in Estrogen levels in the body. And while this could have several hypertrophic benefits, increased Estrogen can lead to significant water retention – thereby increasing blood pressure.

Just like Steroids, any SARM that increases red blood cell production will also cause concern, as this literally increases blood volume and density.

Yes, SARMs do increase blood pressure, but not nearly to the extent that Steroids or other PEDs might. Boldenone and other Steroids are notoriously bad for BP, so, you’re relatively “okay” on the SARMs from. That said, you will want to manage it.

More on this later, but first…

What exactly are SARMs?

SARMs or Selective androgen receptor modulators were invented for one reason only, to replace Steroids in the medical world.

Steroids are known to have caused some severe side effects, especially in females and children, the people we most worry about. Thus, doctor after doctor pleaded with medical engineers and chemists to design something with similar hypertrophic abilities but with fewer side effects.

The answer came in the form of SARMs. These compounds also bind to androgen receptors in the body, but only in muscle and bone tissue. This means when used as a treatment in women there would be fewer side effects, such as male pattern baldness. The patients could grow muscle tissue with far less risk.

This made SARMs overall way better for health, however, nothing is perfect. SARMs still have negative effects, such as altering kidney and liver function, increasing lipids, and blood pressure, and they can even cause Testosterone shutdown in men.

Thus, SARMs have never been approved for human use. They are still listed as “research chemicals” and can be purchased as such online.

How to manage Blood Pressure on SARMs

For all its benefits, a SARM can still have some side effects. As you would want to avoid stroke or heart attack, on cycle or ever, really, it is best that you make sure you are doing everything you can to ensure you do not go down that path.

  • To ensure both your kidneys and blood pressure remain in check, just drink a lot of fluid. Hydration is one of your best tools against blood pressure and kidney damage

  • Stay away from SARMs that are known to increase blood pressure more than others, such as MK-677

  • Try to include a combination of both aerobic (LISS) and anaerobic (HIIT) cardio in your training

  • Reduce body fat as much as you can, and ensure you are using fat loss methods that are healthy

  • A diet rich in fiber and plant proteins might help

  • Certain supplements can help, such as Vitamin B6, Citrus Bergamot, and Grape Seed Extract

  • Reducing total body weight and protein intake can be kept as a final “I’m gonna die unless”

How to manage Water Retention on SARMs

With blood pressure, we also usually talk about water retention. This is because increased water retention will lead to more blood pressure – logically. There are a lot of signs to look out for with water “bloat”, like watery/soft ankles, swollen face (moon face), watery gut, etc. Managing water retention is quite common amongst Anabolic Steroids, especially among people who use multiple PEDs. Here is how to reduce water retention when using SARMs:

  • Manage your estrogen levels, as well as progesterone

  • Follow a healthy diet rich in lean proteins, and antioxidants, and avoid food that digests poorly

  • Avoid using a selective androgen receptor modulator that you know doesn’t work well with you. Just because it works well for your friend, does not mean the same is true for you

  • Manage your salt intake as best you can

  • Stay as hydrated as you possibly can

  • Keeping both HIIT and LISS cardio in your training plan helps as well

  • In some cases, people are overtrained, which can result in some inflammation and water retention

  • Lower the dosages of the SARMs you are using, might not be the answer you wanted, but it’s the truth

Which SARMs are worst for Blood Pressure?

Now that we know how SARMs work, how they affect blood pressure and water bloat, we can finally discuss which SARMs are the worst for blood pressure in general. Guys, please remember that no matter how much you want to avoid it, dosages matter, do not use stupid amounts!

The SARMs that are the worst for blood pressure are MK-677, OTR-AC, and YK-11. These (apart from MK-677) are also the strongest SARMs, so, even at a low dose, you’ll probably still feel the effects.

Which SARMs are best for Blood Pressure?

There are, to my surprise, some SARMs that could actually lower blood pressure while still helping you build lean muscle mass! These include Cardarine and maybe even Ostarine.

Conclusion: SARMs Blood Pressure – Are they worth it?

SARMs are increasing in popularity, there is no denying that. Looking at the position the fitness market is in currently, it would suggest the interest in SARMs is only going to increase. This will, unfortunately, mean that some people will abuse the stuff.

Blood pressure is something that you should be paying attention to! Especially if you plan on doing this for a longer time period. You should test methods to reduce blood pressure and find a good handful that works well for you, or simply go to the doctor.

While you probably won’t ever be “normal”, you can still reap tons of benefits from lowering your blood pressure. Be safe, don’t cut corners, and ensure you do what’s best for your body.

What causes High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure can be caused by various things, such as increased water retention, more blood volume, poor blood lipids, too much muscle/weight, too much fat/weight, drug abuse, etc. Leading a healthy life is the best and easiest step you can take to ensure you do not see an increase in blood pressure.

How do Selective androgen receptor modulators work?

SARMs will bind to the Androgen receptor in the muscle and bone tissue, causing a biological change that will result in more production of muscles. Basically, it increases muscle protein synthesis tremendously.

Which SARMs are the strongest?

The strongest SARMs are YK-11 and OTR-AC. These are not to be use willy-nilly, and they pose a massive health risk.
