    Default New Study on Fullerene.

    theguerrillachemist

Fullerene(Carbon60) is making its round as a dietary supplement and there are some promising studies being conducted to understand its properties. Also known as “Buckey Balls” fullerene is a 60 carbon ring structure whose bonding resembles the pattern of a soccer ball. This study shows the prooxidant/antioxidant effect it can have on muscle fatigue. Muscle fatigue is caused by partial oxidation reactions which create reactive oxygen species(ROS) that can damage cell walls and cell organelles like your mitochondria. Most antioxidants like vitamin C/E ect can only bind 1 or 2 electrons that are in ROS. Fullerene can bind with up to 6 electrons, making it a vastly superior antioxidant molecule. Additionally, fullerene can pass through your cell plasma membranes which fullerenes may have a powerful antioxidant effect on the contractile apparatus of striated muscle, thereby facilitating its functional recovery.

This study showed that fullerene can modulate your prooxidant-antioxidant homeostasis via decreasing levels of H2O2 and TBARS(all prooxidants that damage cells). Fullerene also increases GSH(reduced form) levels, which is your body’s master antioxidant. Bottom line: fullerene could be a promising supplement to help increase endurance during training, as well as decrease muscle fatigue. Fullerene is also being heavily studied as an anti-aging product with promising results so far.

The human equivalent dose for fullerene is 2-4mg/d.
