Some people have a hard time "feeling" their lats during things like pull-ups and pulldowns. One cue that often helps is to think about pulling with your elbows rather than your hands. This helps localize the intention of the movement to the shoulder joint, rather than the elbow. Think about pulling your elbows down and back and try to minimize tension in your forearm. I've heard others say things like "loose hands," "hands like hooks," and even, "forget your hands." All of these cues are meant to emphasize the same action - focus on pulling with the elbow to isolate the primary action of the lats!
