Elite super heavyweight powerlifter Jesus Olivares has the all-time heaviest raw total at a whopping 1,152.5 kilograms (2,541 pounds); set this historic total at the 2023 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships. That performance also featured the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) world record raw deadlift of 410 kilograms (904 pounds).

In a rare achievement, Olivares squatted over 1,000 pounds, bench pressed over 600 pounds, and deadlifted over 900 pounds at the 2023 Sheffield. His performance earned him a payout of £30,000 (approx $36,000) and secured his place for the 2024 edition of the event.

On Oct. 30, 2023, Olivares published a video to his Instagram page, wherein he squatted 463 kilograms (1,020 pounds) raw in training. On the day before All Hallows’ Eve, Olivares put the frighteners on Ray Williams‘ all-time raw squat world record of 477.5 kilograms (1,053 pounds) to celebrate the spooky season. Olivares wore a lifting belt, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps to perform his squat, all of which are legal in raw IPF competition. Squatting such a tremendous weight from combo rack with only a single spotter showed Olivares’ confidence, which is well-founded, given the successful result.

Three-time IPF world champion Olivares settled the barbell on his back and popped it out of the rack, before taking three small steps back and setting his foot position at the optimum width. He braced and began his descent — slow, controlled, and smooth, with solid positioning throughout the lift. While the weight was clearly heavy, he ascended at about the same speed as his descent, suggesting he had more left in the tank.

Incredibly, 463 kilograms (1,020 pounds) is not a PR for Olivares. He previously squatted 470 kilograms (1,036 pounds) at the 2023 Sheffield. His intent for the all-time raw squat world record in the +120-kilogram class seems evident.

Olivares’ next meet is expected to be the 2024 Sheffield Powerlifting Championships on Feb. 10, 2024, at City Hall in Sheffield, UK. With three months of training left until then, Olivares seems well placed to attempt a raw squat world record that has stood for so long. The 2024 Sheffield will be live-streamed for free on the SBD Apparel YouTube channel.
