AOL News (Sept. 15) -- Three FBI agents and an agency analyst in the Washington area were charged with providing false statements after they allegedly failed to disclose on government forms the use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones commonly taken in the sports and bodybuilding world, authorities announced today. One agent is a former bodybuilder.

Authorities said the FBI employees received different diagnoses from a doctor, including "pituitary dwarfism" -- a stunted-growth condition normally diagnosed in children -- and then got numerous prescriptions for the steroids and growth drugs for "which there was no known medical necessity."

Those charged are James Drew Barnett, 42, and Katia Litton, 42, both FBI agents in the Washington field office; Litton's husband, FBI agent Matthew Litton, who works for the bureau's Critical Incident Response Team in northern Virginia; and Ali Sawan, 45, an intelligence analyst with the Counterterrorism Division at FBI headquarters. The employees, who were arrested today at FBI facilities, have all been suspended without pay, the FBI said.

If convicted, each would face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

A court affidavit noted that Katia Litton competed in the sport of body building in 2002.

"FBI employees must be held to the highest standards of ethical conduct," FBI Deputy Director Timothy Murphy said in a statement.

"When this information came to our attention, a thorough investigation was initiated, which led to today's charges," he said. "The investigation is continuing, and the FBI will continue to fully cooperate with the Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, and the Office of Personnel Management."

Specifically, authorities said, the four are charged with omitting information about the treatment or prescriptions on medical history forms used by the bureau to assess an employee's fitness for duty.

One of the court affidavits authored by Nunzio Orlando, a special agent with the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General, addressed allegations against Barnett, who allegedly received from September 2008 to the present treatment from a gynecologist who specializes in "age-management medicine." The affidavit noted that the specialty is not recognized by the American Medical Association.

The affidavit said Barnett was diagnosed as having "pituitary dwarfism," other pituitary disorders and testicular hypofunction and consequently received prescriptions for testosterone cypionate, an anabolic steroid; Tev-Tropin, a human growth hormone; and gonadotropins, which are protein hormones. He also sought to get reimbursed by his federal health care provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield.

The affidavit said the medications "are commonly used in the sports and bodybuilding industry to increase muscle mass and to enable people to recover more quickly after high-intensity workouts."

Barnett's bank account records show he made payments totaling more than $10,000 from September 2008 to April 2010 for lab work, professional fees and pharmacy purchases, according to the affidavit.

Sponsored LinksThe records also showed that Barnett received from Federal Express shipments from seven pharmacies from Nov. 5, 2008, to July 28, 2009, the affidavit alleged.

"At regular intervals, special agents submit to physical examinations where they attest to the status of their medical and physical health," the affidavit said. "During this process, special agents are required to disclose all medical treatments to FBI authorities including physicians, prescriptions and treatments received."

The affidavit noted that Barnett wrote in a document that he was in "EXCELLENT HEALTH" and "omitted any mention of his use of" human growth hormones and anabolic steroids.

If they can get those charges to stick than this country really is in the shitter. A Dr. Writes you a script and you still can't use it?? Also ommitting info on a "Fit for Duty" form is an administrative issue not criminal.

Not surprising they try to use their own as examples, and am I reading this correctly, they have scripts for all of this?? So what is it that they did illegal?? If they didn't list this on their application, then my understanding legally is all that could happen is that they are fired at best??

I am glad these dirty cops are off the streets. Just the thought of someone using prescription drugs to improve their performance makes me sick. They should be thrown under the jail for life. They should stick with the safe stuff like I use such as meth, crack, and heroin. These drugs won't destroy your life like steriods will and since I 'm too lazy to work and live in goverment funded housing I can usually buy my drugs with my welfare checks. Damn I love this country!!
