Do you lock out on exercises?

This week I tried something different, not locking out on anything I did to keep tension on the muscle. Didn't lock out knees for leg press, squats, etc. Didn't lock out elbows for presses. Seemed to make a noticeable difference, the burn was much more intense than usual.

How do you guys train, lock out, no lock out or it varies?

Your never EVER suppose to lock out brutha. You train and lock out everything bro? not trying to sound like im preaching at all but thats like the number one NO NO brutha.

You should get great workouts now and everything should be better now that ur not locking out

The only time I would lock out is if I am tiring and I'm basically taking a break then trying to get a couple more reps in

Well dang, yeah I usually lock out doing squats, bench press, military press, etc. I don't know how the information eluded me for so long, but yeah, I read something the other day where someone described their bench press and ROM stopped right before locking out. I thought that was interesting since I'd never done it that way.

I agree that my workouts should be better now. Muscles were much more exhausted than usual. Maybe this will make a difference in gains for me.

Well you should without a shadow of a doubt have better overall workouts now and actualy gain a good bit more.

Thats crazy though bro , this eluding you so long.

"Now you know, and knowing is half the battle" Thats from "G.I. Joe" cartoon for anyone who remembers the song at the beginning and end of the cartoon, lol. I know im an idiot. But G.I. Joe was on to something with that slogan, lol

actually according to modern research not locking out increases the strength of the joints

It'd be awesome if it did wouldn't it??

This is the only time you should even consider locking out. Locking out on every rep all the time is a recipe for disaester!!!!!

Man, don't I feel like an idiot....all this time doing it wrong, lol. Glad I made this thread though!

I used to, then stopped, i need all the help i can get when it comes to not hurting my joints more. I did notice a difference in the way my knees felt etc.

I'll jump on the " bandwagon " .. Locking out is not a good idea in bodybuilding . Too hard on joints and tendons . It also gives you a little rest . Your reps should be fluid with no interruptions . So if you have to lock to catch your breath maybe lighten the weight to get your rep range .

You may however have to " lock out " on a competitive bench press to make it qualify

Yea, you have to lock out in competition, but that's only 1 rep so it's not really counting into the equation. That's basically a 1RM anyway so it's basically like the last rep where you'd lock it out anyway

The only exception I guess would be doing deads, you ARE supposed to lock those out each rep right?

What do you consider locking out? Are you referring to completely locking the joints and taking weight off the muscle?? I can see not locking out on presses (both upper and lower body) but squats and deads I don't see how you could lock out. On leg extensions I come to a full contraction which would be "locking out" and when I'm doing legs l'll stand for a moment to catch my breath, but how could you even stand up if you locked out on one of these?

Yea, as far as locking out on squats goes, you would have to keep in mind that even when you're standing fully erect with your knees "locked," the weight is still being supported by your spinal erectors and a lot of other muscles, not just the knee joint like say a leg press
